Can it be? Work begins to replace destroyed restaurant row in the Fenway

Actual progress on Peterborough Street today: A small team of workers began removing debris behind the mural-covered plywood to allow for more serious construction of a new building that will house up to nine restaurants.

84-100 Peterborough Trust, which owns the property, says it already has lease commitments from El Pelon, Thornton's Bar & Grill and Rod Dee Thai to return to the block, which went up in flames in January, 2009. An unnnamed Japanese grill and sushi bar also wants to move in, the trust said in a statement.

The owners hope to have a new building up within six months.

Mike Mennonno has come up with convincing evidence that something is actually happening.

I had read a few weeks ago that the owner of the property had finally given up on dreams of a high rise hotel on the lot, and had decided, awe, fuck it, to just rebuild pretty much as is.

He must have read it in the Globe, which I did too, and dismissed as more smoke, if you will, from the owner.

'Bout time -- we'll all be glad to see it back.

I have no doubt that they will rebuild this strip (with essentially the same places). If for no other reason than I know nearly all of the Red Sox staff go to eat there at one time or another during the week.

These landlords think they are God because someone left them property in a will.
