DeLeo: We don't give a fig what the public thinks about gambling plan

Released yesterday, ready for a vote next week. Includes a provision for slots at Suffolk Downs.

The Outraged Liberal wonders:

... Is the racino proposal really so shaky it cannot stand a public discussion? Or because the bill's new provisions really only affect your own district and a couple of others, do you think no one else need bother themselves with the details? ...

Jim, who lives in East Boston, isn't too happy with the Speaker, either:

... There are many legitimate arguments against casinos and slots, and not allowing for an open and fact-based discussion is clearly undemocratic. ...

Your post is the most racist thing I've ever read and was literally a hate crime

No racism at all in the politically annoying (to me, as well as to you obviously) post you attack.

Hasn't the Commonwealth been discussing the casino issue for the past 4 years? It's not like this is coming out of the blue.

Fair point, but discussion/debate around the issue is NOT the same as discussion/debate around what's in this bill and how this whole thing would be implemented; those are two different things, in my view. Idea versus execution.

Personally, I'm not that passionate about it one way or the other. Although I will say I don't see a problem with resort casinos -- I'm scratching my head about the race track slots; a lot of investment, not much job growth, a political move for DeLeo and his district and not much else.

But bottom line: the bill should get a hearing.

the public should have opportunity to speak on this particular plan, which differs from those offered in the past. I have no problem with an accelerated timeline, given that we debate this every year and therefore both sides should have their arguments ready, but there still should be opportunity for public debate.
