For sale: Giant hole, never used

The Globe reports the owners of the Filene's Memorial Hole plan to put the negative space up for sale, as city officials prepare to revoke its building permits after two years of being nothingness.

That's funny, I remember talking about taking away the permits while I was running for Mayor in order to expedite getting action on this. Too bad the Mayor couldn't recognize a good idea right next to him.

The city may have a law saying how long a developer has to begin construction once he obtains a building permit. If that term is two years, then the Mayor can only act now, not last year.

And the developers who created a mess will face harsh fines and be banned from Boston and allied cities? Or to they skip merrily on to their way to their next conquest?

What about the hole that's been there even longer, where the Gaiety theater once stood? Why hasn't Menino been raging about that one (and why haven't the Boston press pushed him on it). Those developers have been allowed to sit on that hole until only a few weeks ago proposing changes, why the developers of the newer hole at the Filenes site have been lambasted for much longer.

Now that the space his up for grabs, how about putting in a gigantic CVS? Five of them within a five-minute walk of Downtown Crossing just won't do.

After the success of what happened to the space left when the elevated I-93 was removed, I propose the Filene's Hole and the Gaiety vacant lot be known collectively as the Kensington/Menino Gravelway.
