Universal Hub going mobile - for reals this time

With any luck, we should have honest-to-goodness UHub iPhone and BlackBerry apps up and running in about a month (I just spent a good part of a perfectly beautiful Saturday designing splash screens and icons).

The apps will have the UHub breaking-news goodness you'd expect, but also stuff like restaurant and store listings and reviews, all searchable and mappable. To get a rough idea of how that'll work, go to www.locallite.com/search.php and search for something (say, "pizza" in "Boston, MA").

It's obviously way more sophisticated than anything I could pull off on my own; I'm working with a local startup called Zebek that's built what seems to be a cool back end for mobile information-based apps. Blatant commercial pitch: If you own a business in the Boston area and want to reach the sort of wicked awesome people who would use a UHub app, contact me.

Droid users will notice I did not mention you. Unfortunately, there's no Droid app just yet. In the short run, there will be a Web interface for you (and users of other mobile phones and devices). But a specific Droid app is in the works.

Thanks! I suspect they'll be concentrating on Droid after Apple and BlackBerry, though.

I don't know how their stats compare to mine, but over the past month, here are the stats for mobile OSes on Universal Hub:

    iphone 53%
     Droid 18%
Blackberry 12%
 iPad/iPod 17%

With everything else making up the rest. Now, the numbers are probably all kinds of skewed, for a couple of reasons: In total, mobile OSes represent only 6.6% of total visits to UH over the past month - and all of that is via Web browsers, since I don't have any apps at this point. Will be interesting to see what happens when the apps go live.

The stats have a differentiation between iPhone and iPod? I figured they would be identical. I can understand a difference between iPhone/iPod and iPad.

But Google Analytics also provides a breakdown of the different versions of Windows, so somebody must see a reason to differentiate (actually, the stats are even broken down between iPhone and iPod; I just smushed them together).

I actually took vacation time this summer and had to depend on my iPhone to keep track of news back home. I was wishing for a UHub app!

The iPhone app will be accessible for blind consumers using VoiceOver, right??

I don't know but will ask.

Sweet, thanks. Boston has a really high concentration of blind folks (Perkins, Carroll Center, et al) so it would seem especially important to make a UH app accessible! Very easy to employ accessibility API when deving for iPhone.

Awesome! I recently purchased an iPod touch and was really disappointed when there wasn't a UHub app. Can't wait. : )

Any chance we'll be able to snap a photo and upload it in a post from the phone?

I asked about that in the discussions (yes, we had teleconferences!). I don't think it'll be in the first rev., but it's something they said the should be able to add.

Thanks for the thought Adam, perhaps my checking of the site will be more frequent once it goes live
