Could the Charles River skateboard park actually be happening?

The Charles River Conservancy and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold two public hearings - Sept. 19 and Oct. 10 - on current plans for the fabled North Point skatepark, which has been promised for land near the Zakim for longer than some skateboarders have probably been alive.

The people actually designing the skatepark - who have designed other skate areas across the country - will attend to hear comments and suggestions on the proposed design.

Both hearings start at 6 p.m. in the Mezzanine Room at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.

Of course, the conservancy and DCR have made similar optimistic statements in the past - repeatedly.

Given all the money bicyclists get with bike paths, bridges, and lanes; swimmers get with pools; hockey players get with ice rinks, might as well throw the sk8ers a bone too. The location sounds convenient to MGH.

At least they'll have a place they can go to without being harassed. I'm going to the meeting.

Hi everyone,
This is Jason, the Charles River Conservancy's Director of Projects, and Project Manager for the Charles River Skatepark.

Thank you for your continued interest in the skatepark project! No doubt, the project has followed a circuitous path with lots and ups in downs over the last 10 years, but in the last several months we have reached some major milestones and leaped over some major hurdles. You might have heard that the CRC and the DCR recently reached a formal agreement that allows the CRC to build the park and the DCR to operate and maintain it. With this agreement now in place, we can really move the project forward.

Over the next several months, we will be updating the initial concept design and going through the necessary permitting process to get this skatepark built! We sincerely hope you will be part of this process and come to our public meetings on 9/19 and 10/10 at the Boston Public Library. This will be a great forum to provide input on the design, as well as learn more about what has happened with the project over the last months and years.

Also keep an eye on our skatepark webpage at: http://thecharles.org/Skatepark.html.

And never hesitate to reach out to us directly if you have any questions.

Thanks!
Jason
