State slaps Charlestown non-profit for shoddy spending; demands some of its money back
The Herald broke the news on Life Focus Center Inc. Read Auditor Suzanne Bump's report. Sample:
We reviewed the documentation LFC maintained relative to 189 of these expenses totaling $28,436 and found that all of these expenses were questionable in that they were either inadequately documented or did not appear to be directly related to LFC's program activities. For example, numerous purchases were made by the Executive Director at various restaurants, many that were out-of-state, located close to the town in which he lives and/or were for purchases made on weekends with no documentation that identified the business nature of these expenses. Examples of questionable purchases include a $52 purchase at a New Hampshire liquor store and 13 expenses totaling $610 that appear to have been incurred during a vacation that the Executive Director took in Florida. Further, many of these purchases, including those for restaurants, were improperly charged as program supply expenses against LFC's state contracts.

The Arrogance
As bad as the results of Bump's audit are, and they're pretty bad (multiple relatives on the payroll, no-show jobs awarded under no-bid contracts, hundreds of thousands of dollars in unallowable credit card expenditures, inadequate board oversight, etc.), the response of the agency head John Millerick is even worse: hightail out of town on yet another Disney vacation and use LFC funds to hire a high-priced PR firm to help quell the media outrage. And the worst thing is that LFC clients have not only been denied funds that should have been spent for their benefit, but they will continue to suffer as donations to this damaged organization dwindle.
I hope the AG makes an example of the Millericks as a warning to others that malfeasance in the name of charitable work will be severely dealt with.
Adam: thanks for the post and
Adam: thanks for the post and the link to Bumps's report. Words can't properly fit what I am thinking after reading the report. It's worse then the Boston Herald article. Astounding. I am sure that the AG has no choice but to prosecute. For the longest time, Millerick, O'Halloran, Conway et., al., had us Hoodwinked. Shame on them. I can wait to see Millerick and O' Halloran.
Rumor in the town, is that a
Rumor in the town, is that a few families have contacted a well know lawyer (Garabedian?) for a class action suit against these folks. Gonna be a world of hurt.
Ice-9: looks like Millerdick
Ice-9: looks like Millerdick was making 200k large. Herald reports he grabbed another 30k even while the auditor was looking at his books....big balls huh?
