Harbor Guy survived the winter
By adamg on Sat, 06/01/2013 - 8:40pm
Noah Sachs spotted Michael Richard Smith, the guy who took up residence on a canoe on Boston Harbor last fall as he paddled past Louis on Fan Pier today.

I wonder where he over-wintered?
Mainer though he may be, it was a pretty tough winter for nasty surf conditions.
Four Seasons, maybe?
:-)
Castle Island
I saw him a couple of times at Castle Island next to the fish pier. It was cold as a witches tit, and there he was with his canoe propped up and him huddling behind it. By this picture, he must have dumped his belongings at a camp somewhere, because the times I've seen him, that boat was loaded. Why isn't he wearing the life jacket the USCG gave him?
Life Jacket
It looks to be in the boat with him at least (orange, in front of him). That's better than a lot of people I see on the water this time of year. I usually wear mine in the harbor, but I don't on flat water when it is this hot out.
USCG condition
For him to continue tooling around the busy port. Not so much to keep him afloat if he dumps, but for visibility. One of the high speed commuter catamarans is going to make him hamburger with diced aluminum.
Full resolution
Hi, he was doing well despite the conditions today! Winds at the inner harbor (this location) were SW and steady 15-20mph with gusts up to ~25mph. There were white caps in the inner harbor, but it didn't get really rough until further out toward's Fisherman's pier.
I've seen him in Fort Point Channel
I though he was a lost fur trapper.
