Cops swarm Fields Corner street as part of citywide drug sweep

The Herald reports Boston Police yesterday rounded up 36 alleged drug dealers - 12 of them just on Waldeck Street in Fields Corner.

Waldeck St has seen an influx of new drug dealers in recent years, and also the forming of a small "gang" if you will...Usually a shooting in that area involves them.

The war on drugs is a complete and total failure. Legalize and tax ALL drugs and violent street crime will take a nose dive.

Right, bc when drug dealers can't sell drugs anymore, they will get legitimate jobs?

Trapped In The Hidden Economy
A lot of these guys have felony convictions already for possession or possession with intent to distribute, so they're stuck dealing drugs simply because they can't get a legitimate job that will pay the rent etc. I think a most of them would prefer legitimate work if they had the chance, particularly if it could offer a shot at a middle-class income and some dignity. According to you, these guys are just throwaways and they're not worth the investment to educate and rehabilitate, but we all pay the costs of gang violence and incarceration in the long run.
I'm sure there are some who
I'm sure there are some who would like a legitimate job, not all of them. Some are self proclaimed "hustlers", hustling is their job, they take pride in it. If they aren't hustling drugs, it would be something else. In order to educate and rehabilitate, you need willingness to participate.
A shot at a middle class income is a great incentive. I'm not sure what the hiring practices are regarding felons. I imagine if anything, they would be hired for entry level jobs. They would never see the same $ they did when hustling. It is an unfortunate set of circumstances.
There are plenty of legitimate jobs for hustlers
You can sell cars, for example, or trade securities derivatives. I'm not being snarky, I'm pointing out that there are plenty of professions in which the skills of a hustler are desired and well compensated.

Yeah right do you actually believe businesses/corporations would hire these guys ? They can't even pull up their pants! I can just picture how the job interview would go. Any real life suggestions?

Do you actually know any drug dealers? The ones I have met wear nicely tailored clothes, and seem to hold their own in conversation at yacht club cocktail parties. I'm sure they'd do just fine in a job interview at a bank.

When Prohibition ended, the criminal moonshiners, smugglers and sellers of booze became, overnight, with a stroke of the legislative pen, legitimate businesses manufacturing, importing and distributing fine distilled spirits.

Dealing drugs WILL be the legitimate business ... right now it's happening but it's underground uncontrolled and dangerous. So legalize it, tax it, regulate it, make money off it and these drug dealers will become legitimate business people. Like the Kennedys who made their dough of boot legging and stock fixing (yes it's true) and when it became legal, look what they were able to accomplish!
East Boston and Drugs
Good job in Fields Corner. The police should do a drug sweep or two in East Boston. A new group of junkies just moved in near me, and more on the street next to mine, and robberies (unreported, of course) are way up. If they clear the junkies, dealers, and gangs out of Eastie the streets will be pretty deserted - but much safer.

I feel like those sweeps were almost always a big fail.
