What's under all that spray paint?

At Billings Field in West Roxbury

Tim Sullivan reports the city DPW placed these altered cardboard boxes all over Billings Field in West Roxbury for the Corrib 5K race today. Surely, somebody at the DPW didn't spend time spray painting out "Thomas M. Menino, Mayor" on lots of cardboard trash receptacles, right?

Surely, somebody at the DPW didn't spend time spray painting out "Thomas M. Menino, Mayor" on lots of cardboard trash receptacles, right?

A better question would be, "After plastering his name just about everywhere else possible, surely Menino didn't have his name applied to city owned cardboard trash receptacles, did he?"

I'm glad Walsh not only obliterated Menino's name, but made it obvious enough to remind observers of Menino's wasteful spending to feed his massive ego. Extra credit for Walsh not sticking his own name on there. At least someone has integrity.

I am sure it didn't take very long to do and it was worth it.

Didn't take very long working overtime on Memorial Day Monday to spray out those trash containers....

Seriously, I'm not sure what to think about this. When we had a department-head switch in our City department the new head could have ordered new letterhead with her name on it. Instead, she waited until we'd worked through the existing supply with the old name before making the change.

Perhaps the message is not sticking one's name over absolutely everything in the city!

I'm sure they have a ton of these things and the painted them ages ago on a slow day.

Good for Mayor Walsh for not tossing these and ordering new ones with HIS name on them!

I thought I read that Walsh had starred putting his name on things already, but only as new signs are needed?

no names of elected officials on anything until they're out of office.

Only time an elected official is ever out of office is if he's dead or indicted.

As a matter of fact, this is false.

Only time an elected official is ever out of office is if he's dead or indicted.

As political rhetoric it's as ignorant as the tea party. We are the government. Try to remember that and stop being so whiny.

As far as putting the mayor name on items funded with tax dollars, I think that practice should end.

I have no problem with someone taking Menino's name of the cardboard waste bins. When they order new ones, I hope they don't put Marty's name on them; "City of Boston" would do.

We aren't the government. The contempt many elected officials have for their constituents and the lack of transparency at the statehouse makes it blatantly obvious.

I appear to have missed a news story. I haven't heard that former mayor Menino is dead or was indicted.

Well in his case cancer was the only reason for early retirement. If Menino had stayed healthy I think he would have made it a point to die in office.

The Mayoral stamping on name is a long tradition, and not just in Boston. The fact that Menino's name was still on these suggests they were bought in bulk, a good idea fiscally. Spray-painting them out was cheap. And if they hadn't, you all would be bitching about how they have the wrong name on them!

But it is Monday morning, so maybe being cranky is forgivable. :)

For 1 million units. Placed about December 28th, 2013. We only had 100,000 in inventory.

I'd love to believe that.

But probably wouldn't shock anyone if true.

Is like an Alcatraz around Walsh's neck?

I'd imagine it is more like a throne in his side.

This was frugality. Wastefulness would have been throwing out the Menino trash boxes and buying new ones that said Walsh.
