No, really: Charles River skatepark construction has actually started

The long fabled, often rumored skatepark next to the Zakim Bridge could actually be on its way. Sure, like everybody else, we always ran the annual story about the thing being near a start, but this time the Charles River Conservancy assures us they mean it: Construction is no longer imminent, it has actually started.

The $4.5-million Lynch Family Skatepark will sit in North Point Park, under the I-93 ramp; the project was initially conceived when the Zakim was just a gleam in the eye of the planners of the Central Artery/Tunnel project.

Once the soil is sufficiently settled and stable and the drainage system is completed, the foundation for the bowls and streetscape can be built. A team of skatepark master builders from California Skateparks will form the complex contours, add the metal edges and pour the concrete, which will be the framework for first world class 21st Century skatepark to be built in Massachusetts.

Weekly updates.

I hope there is a budget for maintenance, trash removal and security. Even a 21st century park will look like the 18th century in a couple months if there isn't proper upkeep.

"Vans will also contribute an additional $25,000 per year for the next seven years to help cover maintenance costs."

On their own. Most parks you'll see people picking up trash, you hit a rock and go flying you can break a wrist. After the winter and during the fall you'll even see people sweeping ramps.

After all were not whinny cyclist, we know we're 2nd class citizen and are fine will it.

You don't see us bitching about long board lanes and skater right.

I miss the 90s befor urban development started making everything skate proof and you could meet random head down the fountain and F with the Pru's security at The Heavens.

Are those the cyclists that ride horses as well as bikes? Fascinating.

Maybe you can write something coherent next time.

go to Copley one afternoon and wait til everyone leaves and you can see how well skateboarders take care of areas they hang out at. Even when most of the cops who kick everyone out of there say "we're only kicking you out because you leave trash everywhere" people still leave garbage all over the place. And there are two trash cans right there by the fountain.

Okay, so you do not regularly walk by or spend any time whatsoever in Copley Sq. because it's not skaters that make up the majority of people hanging out there...

I myself work near Copley and I always look forward to the public works crew turning on the water fountain, if only to stop the endless CLACK CLACK sound I have to put up with everyday as well as the trash that ends up in and around the fountain. I hope the kids enjoy their new park.

Glad skaters are getting a park... it's about time! Don't worry about cyclists bashing you. The ones who constantly comment on this site are professional victims who also drive cars, meaning they're hypocrites. Real urban cyclists are too busy riding to anonymousy whine and moan online.
As a resident of Boston who walks as their primary mode of transportation, I've never had a problem with skaters, super polite and just mind their own business. Some cyclists on the other hand shout obscenities at you if you're on the sidewalk and in their way.

I was about to upvote this for showing up people's prejudice against skaters for being wrong and dumb. But then you have to go all hater on cyclists and be wring and dumb yourself.

How come you gotta out someone else down just to say something nice?

As a skater that had enough time to 1. hear about the millions (yes millions) they raised for it a decade ago, drove past the sign since 2004, and had time to start two businesses and move them to the other side of the country, this is garbage. 2. ACCRUED INTEREST. EVERY BANK HAS IT.

I'd love to see what money went where, because we all know what interest is, and millions accrue pretty nice interest. Where'd that money go and why did vans have to spend another few hundred thousand to get a decade old project working again? Something stinks bad here, and I think we have more than just a few public officials walking around with someone else's money in their pocket because they believe skaters won't notice the difference. It's offensive because they've got this perceived ignorance about the community like we just won't notice. At least the public officials out in the west here care about their constituents and help make public projects happen in a timely fashion instead of continually lying to everyone about progress. Thank god I moved

To a non profit, I helped raise money when I was still a teen over 10 years ago.

This is back when Boston was a huge skate city, and hanger 18, blades boards and skates and Eric Flamers were still open.

It's about time we got something "world class" in this dump of a city.

I don't know what part of Boston you grew up in, that is if your not from Boxboro. But Boston is one of the greenest city's on the E. Coast. If your looking out from an elevated location you can hardly see anything in Boston (except In town) but trees.

If it's so shitty move, we have a housing issue, you packing up your crap would help.

I'd suggest Baltimore or maybe Detroit. Easy drive in a u haul.

So Big Dig promises are finally coming true! Cant wait for the 3 museums we were promised on the greenway (remember "its worth the wait"?) Baker should revive these promises and make these happen, just dump the debt on the highway department! Also, still waiting on the red-blue connector promise and the green line to be revived to Forest Hills and light rail to Dudely Square along Washington. Then the promises of the Weld/Baker era can all be fulfilled.

They did this 15 years ago as promised, as now I'm to old and the ACA gutted my insurance. At 30 I can't afford to hurt myself.

At least they gave us HP when I was a kid.

PS, Still miss Maximus in Cambridge, that place was the balls.

that it's probably a little late to start on that hoop rolling park they promised us back in the '90's? The 1890's?!

The ACA gutted your insurance? Damn Obama hates skaters, that was his plan all along: to weaken health care by attempting to cover all Americans to achieve his real crowning achievement: make it so skaters health care is so weak they will no longer skate. DAMN OBAMA!
