Roslindale architect wins a major award
Studio Luz Architects of South Boston, co-founded by Hansy Better Barraza of Roslindale, has won a 2015 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies for an unusual house on Meyer Street on the Roslindale/JP line:
The first floor is organized around a central stairwell that divides the service spaces from the family social spaces. The stairway serves as a light-well and air chimney for the home. It is made from perforated metal, custom bent to create the steps. The perforations allow for light and air to pass through the space freely. A central galley kitchen allows for the dining and living spaces to overlap with the food (and therefore family) focused areas. On the second level, there are 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and shared storage areas. A full roof deck allows for ample outdoor space for family life.
No word if the major award came in a box marked Fragile.

sweet!
This is such a beautiful house, in so many ways--congrats, and well-deserved! We need to build much more of this thoughtful design and much less of the faux-crap that has become so commonplace in the JP-Rozzi hinterlands.
Wonder how many years the roof will last
Flat roofs + New England winters = raindrop emoji + sad face emoji
New Housing for Bostonians
Doesn't have to be ugly or cheaply built. Kudos to Studio Luz! Now, if City Hall would just demand that housing developers build higher quality projects. We don't need any more Big Box Housing littering our neighborhoods.
ahem, check the pricetag...
fun single-fams, but most "bostonians" could probably not afford this house; good modernist design, however...
