That couch has been floating around the harbor since last Wednesday. I saw it a bit further out while I was sailing on Wednesday afternoon. Glad that it finally made it to shore again.
We have reports of a ... couch... adrift from its mooring off of Governors Island. It has blue-grey pleather upholstery and is traveling at .5 kts towards Deer Island.
I'll say it once again, real slow so you can understand.....
It was reported multiple times to maritime authorities last Wednesday via marine radio. I saw a both a state police and a Coast Guard vessel approach the coach and take note of it. but not remove or move it. I am not aware of what more they may have done. It is not unusual for debris in the water to remain there, floating about until it finally beaches itself. There is a boat that removes debris from the harbor but I believe that it operates only part of the week and only part of the year.
If you ever want to face the cold reality of how much garbage makes its way into the inner harbor then go hangout at LoPresti. I've been taking my kids there every weekend since it opened and it is disgusting. There's this cool little ramp shaped like a spiral that you can walk down to dip your toes in the water, only the high tide mark has a two foot high mound of seaweed tangled with plastic shopping bags and empty 16oz. Poland Spring bottles.
Similarly, the spaces between all the rocks in the sea wall are filled with empty Dunkin Donuts cups and Poland Spring bottles. You don't see a ton of soda bottles, probably because they actually have a cash value. Maybe we should impose a $.05 deposit on Dunkies cups and water bottles.
Well, the 2014 referendum trying to add non carbonated beverages (like water bottles) to the list of containers covered by the bottle bill got defeated by about 70% of the MA electorate (and an approximately $8 million campaign by the American Beverage Association). So, unfortunately, it does not look like this is going to happen any time soon.

Thanks for just hoping it would make it ashore instead of reporting it.
Lighten up,
Francis.

Check the link: this was reported to 311. Does it need to be on a shore to get attention?

bouyant
I'm just surprised how buoyant it is... if its been floating around the harbor for a few days.
I wonder if that's the same
I wonder if that's the same couch that's been sitting on a floating pier tied to a mooring in Portuguese Cove for at least a year now.
