Citizen complaint of the day: Moakley Park becoming Needle Park
A concerned citizen reports there's only so much one person can do to rid the playing fields of Moakley Park of needles:
Over the past week I've encountered several used hypodermic needles on the benches, Infield, and outfield spaces at Kirby and Veins fields in Moakley/Columbus Park in South Boston. Each time I took a used bottle/car/or cup and contained the needle and threw away off site. Again this morning, during a softball practice at Veins field I found another needle in center field with the tip snapped off. It is my understanding that there are numerous youth leagues that play in these field spaces and they are also open for public use. Now that it is baseball/softball season, I hope that these fields can be inspected by the city more often and more closely so that no accidents occur among the youth groups (and adults) who utilize these fields. I would hate to see someone accidentally be pricked.

FYI for Good Citizens
Stores such as Dollar Tree and Home Depot sell those reach/grabber claw devices that you can use to pick stuff up without touching it, and a laundry detergent bottle doubles well as a sharps container.
If you or a curious child do get pricked, (my boss did last year, someone threw out an insulin needle in the general trash) you have to go to the ER for blood tests, and you get a cocktail of drugs to prevent hepatitis, AIDS, and infection.
In addition to property tax hikes
Not to dump on the writer of the previous post, but now, in addition to the property tax hike that the city is trying to fool us into, we now have to go into our pocket to buy a handy-grabber to clean up after junkies who carelessly discard their free syringe we bought for them. Maybe Linehan can earmark some cash from his tax hike on people who legally drink alcohol to hire someone to clean up after the selfish junkies. Oh I forgot-- their selfish, wreck less behavior that puts children at risk is part of their disease. Please, excuse them.
must have been there first
must have been there first week at the park
Typical
Typical selfish junkie assholes. 'Well I have my fix now, let me litter this public space with my now used needle and let someone else take care of it.'
I play rugby in moakley most of the year alongside soccer, softball and flag football leagues... We pay for our time
There and it's gross that we have to sweep the fields prior for this garbage. Enough already.
If I were in Moakley's family,....
...I'd demand they take the family name off of that park.
And if I were paying to play on that shitty field...I'd stop doing so immediately.
But maybe that's just me.
Trust me
Trust me, we do not like playing and practicing on moakley, but adult leagues are given little priority. There's many fields in dot, Westie and Brighton we'd love but moakley is the lone option.
I'm glad youth fields get the nod over us but it is what it is. Stinks all around.
Walk around the park
Menino's name is on more things there than Moakley's. And it can't be removed because the Mayor had his name engraved.
hope you are that worked up for dog owners
same shit...literally.
You're totally right....
You're totally right.... Hepatitis and poop, same.
Needle exchange program
We all pray for the lost souls who become addicted to heroin. The needle exchange program worked and should be brought back along with better treatment centers for addicts.
Needle Exchange
Clean needles for junkies means dirty needles for children.
guess you missed the part about "exchange"
You bring in a dirty needle (instead of leaving it in the park) and you get a clean one.
Head in the clouds
Do you really believe that these junkies aren't going to these "exchange" centers or other spots along the stroll and getting free needles? The junkies should go clean the park of all the needles and then they'd have plenty of dirty ones to "exchange". Oh that's right, cleaning the park requires work. They can't work. It's part of the "disease".
Keep the Kids in your Prayers
While you're praying for these lost souls, please pray that no child steps on a needle and becomes infected by the hepatitis and AIDS that these lost souls carelessly leave on the ground.
Veins Field?
A little on-the-mark, don't you think?
A little background
Its named after a boy who was accidentally shot to death in an Old Colony apartment (Tommy Veins) in summer of 1990. While the spelling is the same, I think its pronounced more as vee-ins, than veins?
Curious as to why the
Curious as to why the Memorial at the Babe Ruth Field for Tommy Veins was even brought up in this convo? Understand the complaints about used syringes in a playground, little league field, etc but WHAT does that Memorial have to do with ANYTHING?! Bringing up a Memorial Stone for a murdered 13 yr old South Boston boy in the same convo regarding dirty needles? WHY? Tommy Veins' name or death shouldn't even be mentioned here.
Or on the right "track"
Or on the right "track" anyway
Free Needles
Perhaps if the city, hospitals, and the rest of the do-good ers stopped funding and providing free needles for these people to illegally shoot controlled substances into their arms, there would be fewer needles on the ground in our parks for our children to step or fall on.
Free needles for junkies means dirty needles for children.
Again
A need exchange means "junkies" trade in their dirty needles for a clean one.
In a thread full of dumb things...
...yours has reached special heights, arthur. You will notice that the second word in "needle exchange" is "exchange." As in, you give them your used syringes, and they give you clean ones. That way, you incentivize addicts not to leave their syringes on playgrounds, and you help stop the rampant spread of hepatitis among people who share syringes.
But I do appreciate that you copy-pasted the same thing into a couple of places, and then doubled down with an argument that mandatory minimum sentencing for heroin users would stop the problem. I agree. We should definitely try something like that... it would be like we declared war. On drugs. A war on drugs! That would stop drug use, for sure. Let's institute that policy today, and then check in in 2046 to congratulate ourselves on how well it worked.
Just checked
I just checked, I said to lock up "dealers". Maybe they have "the disease" too. So let's excuse them as well.
Yes
Because desperate druggies sticking needles into their fill-in-the-blank are so concerned with littering and adult or child sports leagues using the park. These are dead man or woman walking with hep, HIV, etc. This is in no way excusing the park's conditions or the fact druggies are shooting up in it. It is what it is.
Not just needles
I found this gem while cleaning my front yard.
Oh yeah I find needles all the time. We had to have a sensor installed on our front steps because junkies were using our front porch to shoot up in at 3am. The porch light seems to keep them away. Nothing worse leaving the house at 530 and having to call 911 because someone OD'd on your front porch.
Regardless of what you think of "careless junkies" or "stupid needle exchanges".. this problem has rose to epidemic proportion now, and I fear the worst has yet to come.
You are correct
I fear you are correct. Why is there no mandatory minimum sentence for drug dealers, especially heroin dealers, who are contributing to this epidemic. There are mandatory minimums for possessing a handgun which you may or may not ever use. Possessing heroin for sale is sure to be sold to someone who will eventually die from using it. The criminal element has been removed from heroin. It's only viewed as a sickness. Judge Bolden in South Boston District Court is no help. He constantly hands out CWOF's and dismissals against drug dealers, some with violent and long records. BPD had a terrific drug control unit in South Boston that was eventually demoralized due to Judge Bolden's inaction on the cases they made. He let too many of these dealers off the hook with a promise to get treatment. What is being done regarding this crime wave and health epidemic it is causing is noble, but it's not working.
party
Party at your place!
LOL
As someone on my facebook posted under that picture "It musta not been any good if they threw it away"
And truthfully, that was a big baggie rip. Musta been an ounce of stuff.
And considering it was powdery and off color, along with knowing what the junkies in my neighborhood like to do.. I'm guessing it was an opiate. All set with that.
yep
The fun stuff is white; heroin is tinged brown.
Yeah right
I call shenanigans - you're just trying to keep the yuppie gentrifiers out of your neighborhood, aren't you?
[kidding]
LOL
No need. They can just clean my yard twice a month and find all sorts of goodies. That would be enough to keep people away.
That and the footage from my neighbors security camera at 3am. Weird crap happens on my street at 3am.
