Holocaust-denial billboard goes up in the North End
UPDATE: Billboard ad to be taken down.
No, not the World War II holocaust, but the World War I holocaust in which Turks slaughtered Armenians. Elizabeth Weinbloom forwarded a photo of a new billboard over Cross and Salem streets, just up Cross from the Greenway's Armenian Heritage Park, site of the annual commemoration of the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians in the old Ottoman Empire.
The URL on the billboard, "proudly paid for by the Turkic Platform, Istanbul," leads to a site that denies the Armenian holocaust happened and that claims Armenians ran terror squads to murder Turks.
The rightmost hand is in the colors of the Armenian flag.
Daytime view of the billboard.
A similar billboard was pulled last year.

I'm not going to link to it, but it's there.
Thanks, description updated
It was not working most of the day, though.
Symbolism?
I don't get it. I'm open to the possibility that I'm just plain thick, but can someone explain what the hands are telling us?

Maybe very important in Turkey?
My first thought was that that's the sign you make behind your back when you're pretending to agree to something, like Russians and Armenians would do, I guess. But I'm not up on my Turkish symbolism, so that's just a guess.
The Turkish finger is making
The Turkish finger is making the peace sign.
The other two fingers, one representing Armenia and the other Russia are making a crossed finger sign. The crossed finger sign is from childhood when you say something and don't really mean it, or it's a lie.
The story in the Boston Globe also points out there is a memorial walk re the Armenian Genocide which will occur very close to the sign.
All in all, it's a red flag in front of a bull. Very poor taste.
I don't get it either
But there are a ton of Armenians in the Greater Boston area, so perhaps it is targeted at the community internally?
Watertown...
From Wikipedia:
Watertown, Massachusetts is the center of Boston Armenians, where according to estimates about 7,000 to 8,000 people of Armenian origin reside, though the 2000 Census put the number only at 2,708. The Armenian Library and Museum of America is located in Watertown. Other towns in the area with significant Armenian populations are Worcester (1,306), Belmont (1,165), Waltham (1,091) and the city of Boston (1,080).
Fairly overt?
The Turkish flag is doing the peace sign while the Russian and Armenian flags are making crossed fingers.
Meanwhile, my reaction to this billboard is more in line with a third hand gesture, and it's not the Spock one.
I'm standing at the corner of
I'm standing at the corner of Cross and Salem Streets and I don't see a billboard. No one else sees one. There is no billboard here.
Taken down already?
NorthEndWaterfront.com has a photo as well of the billboard atop the old Bread and Butter.
He's being cute
Not only is there no billboard, there was never any billboard. You were mistaken. It may have looked like a billboard, but it wasn't.

My mistake

ive never actually met a turk
that thought these things didnt happen
I'll just get right to it.
Who rented the billboard?
Clear Channel
Or "I (heart) radio" if you prefer.
No one is
hearting their radio any longer.
"I [heart] radio" is the most worst corporate name
Friends don't let friends listen to Clear Channel, irrespective of their current idiotic name. But listen to FM below 92 Mhz (and 95.3 in Boston) and you'll still hear good radio.
Radio isn't dead, it's just hiding in the basement.
Maybe Serdar Argic did?
And I expect his response to all the turkey posts here real soon now.
(There are a few old Usenetters here who remember him, right? )

Sick to my stomach
This is absolutely revolting.
For those interested, this is clearly placed to coincide with the annual reconfiguration of the sculpture in the Armenian Heritage Park, which will take place this Sunday. Every year, a crowd gathers to watch the installation be taken apart and put back together.
The sculpture is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Armenian Genocide, as well as all the genocides that followed. That billboard is an insult not just to Armenians, but to everyone who has suffered the same fate in the past 100 years.
More information about the Armenian Heritage Park.
...as well as all the
The sculpture's inscription only mentions the Armenian genocide, nothing else. Meanwhile, all the Armenian genociders/genocidees/survivors are long past their life expectancy by now. If you're taking it personally, that's on you.
Yes, let's forget history
I am very happy for you that you have never heard your relatives talk about the things they lived through.
I'm not even Armenian
I just have a sense of humanity, and that's enough to make this offensive.
I'd like to get the Melnick
I'd like to get the Melnick brothers' take on this billboard.

It's down
I just emailed a request to remove it to their Director of PR and he actually wrote right back to say it was down as of 10:30am this morning (it's 10:34 right now, so minutes ago)!
"Billboard ad to be taken down" article has been deleted?
I followed your link, and the article isn't there anymore.
Link works now
I screwed up the HTML, sorry.
At least the billboard isn't
At least the billboard isn't as ugly as the ones Nick Varano would put up in the same spot featuring a huge close up of his dumb face. Below the billboard is where Nick Varona's "famous" roast beef was. So famous is closed soon after it opened. Nick Varano is very annoying to me if you couldn't tell.
for the pics-or-it-didn't-happen crowd
yeah, it has rightly been taken down.
