Don't Get It
If it's just one train, surely they can store such at the loop at Heath, which could likely store a couple if need be, rather than the current practice.

Heath is just a section of outdoor track, in the middle of the road. There's no way to secure it - you'd have trains vandalized and/or broken into, junkies climbing into them and OD'ing, etc. I guess if they built some fencing structures and gates it would be possible, but it's not as simple as parking it there like it's a car.
No storage outside
Past efforts to store trains in some of these easily accessible locations have resulted in vandalism or people looking for a warm place to sleep at night. The loop is accessible to the public and while it is MBTA property it is less secure, say, than the yard at Lechmere or Boston College.
Second, Health may not be a designated start-stop location for union drivers. Collective bargaining contracts and assignments have drivers of trains starting at certain locations. Unless an operator is assigned to a specific station or yard to start and end their runs, they cannot start or end there.
The answer may be in ending the run at Heath, then "dead heading" (running with lights out and no passengers) back in town. That way the other trains are relieved of waiting. At this point however, the schedule for the next few months has been published and the T may not be able to cancel that run until the next schedule change. Any reductions in service even if it is one train, is subject to various government (state and fed) oversight.
We learned that when they ended the "temporary" late night service and the FTA was on them for not publishing a transit plan that showed ending the service would not impact the public.

Would love to see it implemented. As he points out, we'd only need one bus an hour per route connecting in DTX. This seems very doable.

Great Idea for late night service
I like the idea that Commonwealth Magazine put forth on late night bus replacement service. I have been stuck on the last train of the night and the waiting stinks especially if you need to use a restroom and have to wait for a long time. Taking the last train from Assembly to Forest Hills can take an extra 30-45 min and make a 35 min train ride 75 min long. I have also been at Forest Hills waiting for the last train on a bus and it seems like such a waste of time.
