Beefy plane lands at Logan
By adamg on Thu, 01/26/2017 - 3:08pm
Dan Santry watched a two-level Emirates A380 land at Logan around 2 p.m. Logan has seen a few landings of the planes - which require special two-level jetways - for tests or in emergencies before, but this is the first one to be scheduled to carry passengers here.
Travel New England watched it come in over the water:

If You Look Real Close at the Bottom of the Plane....
You can see all the souls of all of the quasi-slave laborers from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh who have died constructing that future ghost town of Dubai.
Scary or comforting?
I can't decide whether it's worrisome or heartwarming that someone is monitoring such things and even getting in position to film them.
It's the "trainspotting" of this century I guess.
Easy enough
Go to Orient Heights, then go out Saratoga Street toward Winthrop. It's a 1500' straight shot view to the runway.

Planespotting his hugely popular with aviation buffs. You must have been doing other things. They've also done some good work such as:

Nothing scary
Many airports even have designated overlook points for plane-spotters. DFW's is pretty neat with a memorial, old beacon, and a loudspeaker with live air-traffic control traffic playing (I had a good 5 hours to kill before my flight...).

People knew yesterday
There's some site (alas, I didn't bookmark it) that lets you see which plane is flying which route and somebody noticed a change in the plane that normally flies the Dubai-Boston route (a 777, I think) and word quickly got out among planespotters, who, yes, were waiting.
This Century?
I remember heading out on bikes with my BFF to take pictures of planes of a lazy Sunday afternoon.
In 1982.
On Sunday afternoons, my father often took me and
my brothers over to Winthrop to watch the planes land and take off - this was in the late 1960s.
So yes, it's hardly a recent trend for people to do 'planespotting'.

Glad Massport spent $30M to accommodate a plane that won't be built for much longer. Airlines simply don't want to operate these super jumbos.

Did you read your links? The first article is just a Boston Globe photo collage of PR photos of Emirates A380 interior designs.
The second link indicates Emirates has slowed delivery of A380s due to a dispute about the Rolls-Royce engines. And the commentator at the end of the article indicates that the plane may simply be ahead of its time.
“But for airlines as operators it carries a large element of risk in terms of ability to fill every seat. It may be ahead of its time but then, we said that about the 747 in 1969 and look what happened a few years after that.”
Now it's true that the time of the 747 for passenger service is passing but that's more than 50 years of service life. And it'll continue as a cargo carrier for now.
A more salient point may be that Emirates is receiving government support to make these planes profitable, plus they focus primarily on long-haul international routes, not the Boston-NYC-DC shuttle.
You could certainly have a debate about how long it would take Boston to receive more than $30 million worth of benefit to support the Emirates Boston-Dubai route that this A380 flies. But even if the plane is downsized to a smaller Airbus or Boeing model there is still likely some benefit to ensuring that the Boston-Dubai route persists.
Couple more photos, of it landing and taking off
