California newspaper apologizes for calling South Boston residents Southies, but says it's kind of our fault

Faced with a deluge of complaints from the Hub, the food writer who said a new Wahlburgers would let Californians "eat like a Southie" has apologized for the gaffe, but not without adding:
Although in all fairness Southie does sound like a person and not a place.

They should have said "eat like a Masshole" We can't argue with that.
Except...
...that Massholes eat somewhat differently depending on the part of the state. Eastern Mass people, for example, are a lot less likely to have had the experience of fried dough with maple cream, which is perhaps the grand ultimate junk food.

Southie works as an adjective. Although they'd still have the problem that it's entirely the wrong neighborhood for an article about the Wahlberg clan.

Eastern Mass drivers are the ones who earned the name Masshole. Not people from other parts of the state.

If you want it to.
Your use is more colloquial and speaking about a dorm thus it works better. In regards to saying someone is from somewhere such as a town and/or city, better to say, I am from South Boston or wherever. Using clearer language, in that instance, means less misunderstandings.

"Southie" is the correct term for anyone from South Boston. Anyone saying that's not, like that bow-tied bumkisser Spencer Buell, is lying. My Grandfather & my Father were proud Southies. My Grandmother was from Dorchester, which was a pit then & still is, but being from Dorchester does not make you a Southie."

I remember when I was a kid and us Millies (Mission Hill) got into a jam with the Westies. We were expecting a bunch of little terriers but that didn't happen.

I will never understand
I will never understand peoples fascination with Southie. Is it that green sweatpants are considered formal wear? The fact that until 5 years haute cuisine in Southie came from a convenience store? That the neighborhood pastime is complaining about parking?
