Major gas leak that started with 'a loud sound, like a clap,' forces evacuations in Cambridge

Police have evacuated Binney Street between 2nd and 3rd streets due to a gas leak at 100 Binney St. Cambridge Police report:

Buildings in the immediate vicinity are being and have been evacuated to ensure the safety of those in the area; traffic is also being diverted.

John Garabo reports a worker may have hit a gas main during construction.

Jeremy Gilbert reports:

I was there on Linskey at 8:00am. Large excavator digging a trench. Loud sound like a clap, then lots of hissing. no gas smell immediately then a minute later cops came and told us to evacuate.
