If you live in the St. Marks Area of Dorchester, might be a good idea to lock your car doors

A St. Mark's Area resident reports his car and a neighbor's car were broken into last night. He admits he didn't lock his car; the thief got away with a GPS - but left about $10 in change.

I absolutely blame the victim. If you don't lock your car in Dorchester (and elsewhere), you are asking for trouble. More than once I've seen alleged would be perps walking or bicycling around the neighborhood testing car doors. When I see it I call 911. But for those times when I don't see it happening, I lock my car doors.

that it's advisable to just leave your doors unlocked, so as to prevent the windows being caved in, and make sure there's nothing of value in the car worth stealing.

In fact, funny story, When I lived in the south end my car was broken into. They went through all the crap in my car and put it into a Saks Fifth Avenue dress bag. They only took two leather briefcases and my cell phone. My car was much cleaner after the robbery than it was before .

More recently in Dorchester I ask and I left my car door open and somebody stole my prescription glasses. And my easy pass. I actually found my sunglasses on the sidewalk nearby. For some reason they kept the prescription glasses. Sadly I didn’t even notice that my car broke into until until I found my prescription sunglasses on the sidewalk.

And guys that break into cars rarely smash the window unless it is the daytime and they can make a quick getaway on a bike and get something very valuable in plain sight.

Nighttime guys usually just check handles and move on.

Sure, trolls never do pathetic stuff like this post.

I couldn't resist, and this still isn't trolling. It's having good fun since someone else chimed in with the victim blaming bit. I wouldn't even have thought of you otherwise.

But if you think this is trolling you need to re-read the definition of trolling.

My correspondent was a tad sheepish about that.

Yeah... sounds equivalent to the $10 in change.

For GPS, I prefer my Garmin over my smart phone and no, I am not baffled by technology. I will use the phone only if I don't have the Garmin with me.

There's something to be said for not needing data service for a GPS to work. But Garmin's UI is so awful that I refuse to use them. Getting it to recognize an address drives me insane.

I don't want to use up all my data on navigating, and sometimes my phone is too slow and can't figure out where i am or just freezes entirely. Or I'm in the boonies with no reception. My garmin isn't Google maps but for my particular circumstances it's more reliable. and kept out of sight in a locked car...

It was available as an integrated system when we bought the car but we already had the standalone and the reviews of the Honda system weren't that good (plus it's several times the cost of the portable one) so we decided not to bother.

There are places on this planet - including those with roads - that are completely out of range of a cel phone tower!

Drive across the country and you will find them.

in case you need to make or receive a call. It's also usually a larger and clearer display than on a smartphone.

I have both a smartphone and a standalone GPS. When I'm going to an area I'll need a GPS for, I put the standalone GPS in the lower left corner of my windshield. While I don't usually need it for navigation most of the way there, I find the time estimates useful.

And yes, when I leave the car somewhere, even in my driveway, I either take the GPS with me or put it in the trunk (a decent GPS case that will store the unit and the power cable costs about $12). I also keep wet wipes with me so I can clean off the residue from the suction cup mount - the mount goes into the covered cubby in the center console.

Your site is so ridiculously slanted toward Roslindale/West Roxbury it's ridiculous. UHub is the worst.

I wrote what I did because somebody who lives in St. Marks contacted me. If somebody from Bellevue Hill or Metropolitan Avenue had contacted me and suggested I post a similar warning, I would've written the same thing (in fact, one of the first things I wrote on UHub was about just this sort of thing on Bellevue Hill).

But I'm glad you're such a regular reader that you notice I write a more about the neighborhood I live in and the one I frequent.

That you consider UHub the worst, though, pains me. Perhaps it's time for you to find another local Web site to get your local news from. I hate the thought of somebody getting heartburn here.

It's not UHub's fault. It wanted to go cover car break-ins in other places, but it couldn't because some jackwad stole its GPS. Stop blaming the victim!

UHub navigates exclusively by dead reckoning, as our forefathers did, and if it was good enough for them, it's good enough for the UHub Mobile Action News Unit.

UHMANU? We need a better acronym. Get to work on that Adam. I await a proper naming convention and fun acronym.

I live in the Back Bay and my car has been broken into more times than I care to count, with and without the doors locked. ( yes I admit it, on a couple of occasions in 25 years I forgot to lock the doors, and once they stole the GPS my parents gave us for Christmas -though usually it's the change in the door handle).

Fish where the fish are. Fotunately, I'm just a guppy.

At every civic meeting I've ever attended the community service officer always tells the group not to leave anything of value visible in your vehicle (laptops, cellphones, purses, etc).

Why a thief would think a standalone GPS is valuable is another thing altogether. :-)

In their pockets.

Remember we're probably dealing with druggies here. they don't have the best judgement and will try to steal and sell anything.

I always keep my doors locked wherever I am. And leave nothing, I mean nothing, of any value in sight.

Common sense unless you park in your driveway in someplace that absolutely never sees unknown passerby.

As a Dorchester resident, I tell anyone who visits me that anything that's left outside unlocked or unattached (bikes, tools, packages etc.) is considered a donation by the standard of the neighborhood. Once you've accepted that as a fact of life and protect your possessions accordingly, it's actually not that bad.

Another Dorchester resident here.
Someone once stole potted plants from my back porch.
And my next door neighbor's newly planted bushes in the front yard were stolen last fall.

I miss my old neighborhood...
St Peter's, then St. Anne's.
Good times!
