Man hit and killed by commuter-rail train in Cambridge

Transit Police report a 60-year-old man on the Fitchburg Line tracks near Fawcett Street in Cambridge was hit and killed by an inbound train around 12:15 p.m.
Foul play is not suspected, police say.

Was man hit by train in Cambridge or Belmont?
I realize Cambridge and Belmont border each other but the T Police press release headline says man hit by train in Belmont while the info in the release says he was hit in Cambridge.

I think probably Cambridge. I'm just guessing based on them saying "near Fawcett St.". Fawcett is maybe 1/3 mile or so from the Belmont line. So, if it happened within Belmont, I'd expect them to have mentioned a different nearby street.

The MBTA has had a number of homicides on the tracks in the past year. My question is who heads the investigation into these homicides? Is it the Transit Police, Cambridge Police or State Police?

The DA for the county the incident happened in, in this case, Middlesex.
This would not have happened if there were a pedestrian bridge
over the tracks, connecting the Fawcett Street side to the CambridgePark Drive side. Or even a legal, official grade crossing with gates, lights, and bells.

They haven't said why the person was on the tracks but you're right about the need for a bridge. It's a long way to go to get from that part of Cambridge to Alewife.
The problem with putting a
The problem with putting a bridge at Fawcett St is where would it connect to? It's all private property on the north side of the tracks, and I'm not sure any of those office or residential buildings would want the bridge on their property. Plus it would need to be longer than usual to go over the maintenance facility there.
I could see the appeal of a path along the ROW from Fawcett St to the Alewife Brook Pkwy bridge though.
Developers want it
Can't find the link but one of the developers has already said they'd welcome to bridge & path provided they don't need to pay for it. A multiuse path on the south side of the tracks would also help considerably, as you note. There's plenty of ROW clearance for it.

Cambridge has been studying
Cambridge has been studying and planning such a bridge for years. Maybe just bike/ped, maybe also shuttle buses.
But you can't build a bridge out of studies.

They've been studying this for years? Then they probably could use all the mounds of useless paper they generated (or mounds of taxpayer dollars) to build the bridge!
