This is the time of year...
... people start dumping unwanted pets.
Let me know if you want to abandon your pet in a field somewhere
I'll drive you to Planned Parenthood myself so that you can get the voluntary procedures that I would like for you to get.
Because, you know, that species is totally native to (expletive) New England. Yep, that giant snake doesn't like deserts, it's from Brookline. Jerkoff.
EDIT: The royal "you", not a direct reply to the commenter.
A completely honest question
What kind of snake is it?
looks like
Ball python?
Ball python
It's a ball python. Hardly a "giant snake" - maximum size is roughly 6 feet, and this one is probably only 3 to 4 feet long.
Giant
Relative to indigenous snake species in New England, not to all of them.
Indigenous snakes of MA
There are 14 species of snakes indigenous to Massachusetts; several of them grow as long as a ball python, and a couple grow significantly longer. This really isn't a giant snake.
My milk snake ...
Brings all the boys to the yard.
(we found a 2' molt when my guys were of show and tell age)
Thanks
(But the ball python is native to Africa.)
Clearly this snake is being
Clearly this snake is being sssstrategically usssed to control the turkey population.
Turkeys eat snakes
but snakes will eat bird eggs. Might be a standoff in this case.
Judge Gertner around the
Judge Gertner around the corner sure could have used this guy's help back when that cockatoo was chipping away at her house (uhub archive link).
Adorable!
( to someone, I'm sure )
Can confirm
Would pet.
(They're so soft and smooth! And I bet it's all warm from sunning itself.)
Ball Pythons are the Golden Retriever of snakes
They are harmless to humans. Called a Ball Python because when they are scared they curl up into a tight ball. As pets, many people feed them only previously frozen rats and mice so many adults don't even have the skills to kill the living type.
Ball Pythons are good at escaping so this one might have slithered away now that it's warmer. Hopefully it finds itself way back home with the help of some kind humans. They don't do well below 50 degrees.
People shouldn't fear snakes, particularly the ones in New England. They eat pest critters and do no harm. While Mass has a few highly endangered varieties of poisonous snakes, they are extremely rare. (Definitely not found in urban areas.) Should you be lucky enough to encounter one it will not strike unless you attempt to pick it up.
Oh yes. Ball pythons are
Oh yes. Ball pythons are great. Except when they go on hunger strikes. Because why would you want to eat your food?
Arguably the best snake to get as a pet, except for the hunger strike thing. Like all pets, just do your research before making a commitment to caring for a living thing for the entirety of its life.
Best pet snake
My own vote for best snake for a pet goes to the corn snake - easier to feed, plus they come in a mind-boggling array of cool color and pattern morphs nowadays.
resting and digesting
the bulge in the mid front presenting part looks like a postprandial state
Jake
"the snake" Roberts probably lives in Allston now.
