UPDATE: East Boston Municipal Court Judge John E. McDonald, Jr. recused himself due to a "familial connection" to Marquado; her arraignment was delayed until April 18, the DA's office reports.
Donna Marquado, owner of Donna's Restaurant, 980 Saratoga St., faces arraignment in East Boston Municipal Court today on charges she kept $60,000 in collected state meals taxes, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Marquado faces 39 counts each of failing to pay taxes and filing false tax returns on the money, following an investigation by the state Department of Revenue and State Police, the DA's office reports.
Innocent, etc.

The difference between laws and rules.
When citizens commit crimes they break laws when troopers commit crimes they break rules.
Not even
You see, there are twentyseven copslaining explanations on how it really wasn't a rule, really wasn't broken, really wasn't what was being talked about, really wasn't wasn't wasn't wasn't ...
From the restaurant's website:
"As for my mother Donna, she is the captain of the ship, the leader of the pack. She is delightful and the perfect remedy to the start of a wonderful day. From her charming ways to her forty years of duty, she is one-of-a-kind. Her picture is next to the words hard work and dedication in the dictionary, and is called "aunty" by many children that stop in for a delicious breakfast with their loved ones."
And she is a greedy "no-tax paying" piggy.
so sad
They are good people the zullo's - this is so sad..
It's Sad That Honest, Hard Working People Could Lose Their Jobs
If the allegations are true, the owners have no one to blame but themselves. When you commit tax fraud, you're stealing from every other law abiding taxpayer. Such criminals are not good people, no matter how pleasant they might appear on the surface.
A long established business should know better. Surely they've seen what happens to other places that tried to pull off similar scams. So, they're also pretty stupid.
You’re kidding, right?
Do you even know the Zullos?
Yeah I do. Yeah they don't
Yeah I do. Yeah they don't have a clean record but would give you the shirt off their back if they could - that is the kind of people they are.
Sure about that?
Maybe if you had seen Johnny beat the shit out of people for no reason because of who his brother was, then maybe you’d know why they found him in his car with three in the back of his head.
@BrianRiccio What brother
@BrianRiccio What brother would you be referring to as I’m sure you know there was 10 of them! It sounds like you know the family very well! Did Johnny happen to beat the shit out of you possibly for having a big mouth! It sounds a little unfair to stamp the Zullo family as not being good people when there is so many of them!
good people
I've been a frequent patron at Donna's for over 5 years. The Marquardo's are good, hard working people. They show up to work every day and greet all their customers with a smile and great service (not to mention great food). Equally important, they employ good people; Whether you are management, ownership or employee, everyone is treated the same.
awful to see this
This family has had business up the heights for 60 years and between her, her mother and father have worked their tails off. i am so sad to read this...
Be that as it may...
They charged their customers meals tax and then put it in their pockets instead of forwarding it to the state.
And from what I've heard of
And from what I've heard of former workers, they'd take employees tips as well.
Good people
I don't know if the allegations are true or not, but good people do not steal. This goes beyond simply not paying taxes, as it entails collecting people's tax payments and then pocketing the money rather than forwarding it to where it was intended to go.
She Called All Her Customers "Honey", Then Stole Their Tax Money
I don't say "evasion," I say
I don't say "evasion," I say "avoision."
Where is the GoFundMe?
Will anyone be collecting donations like they did when Toscanini’s got busted for tax evasion?

(I’m kidding. I thought that was outrageous)
Globe article
I have no opinion on it, if people want to donate money, fine, but there was a glowing Globe article yesterday on Toscanini's which did not mention that.
Cash only business
I have to believe this is an oversite more than a case of trying to dupe the system. I would guess she makes half that in a month, so to risk family name and business for 60k (yes to me it's a lot of money) doesn't seem worth it. Now there are some cash only places that sketchy AF, and that's the reason they are cash only. I have always been leary of them but Donna's seems to be the exception as far as being sketchy
I'd say stealing money is
I'd say stealing money is pretty sketchy.
