Citizen complaint of the day: You try explaining dog piss to little kids
By adamg on Sat, 10/19/2019 - 10:10am
One aghast Beacon Hill citizen put this sign in his or her Revere Street window to try to get dog owners to keep their pets away from the flowers. But the sign made another Beacon Hill citizen aghast enough to file a 311 complaint about the language used on the sign:
I had to explain what the word "piss" meant to my twin daughters while we were walking to the car. This is gross and offensive.

Let go of your pearls, Muffy!
Let go of your pearls, Muffy!
If your precious babes are old enough to read, they're old enough to understand: "Darlings, some people without much class say 'piss" when they mean 'wee-wee.'"
How old are your twin daughters anyway? About nineteen?
Maybe the homeowner was
Maybe the homeowner was pissed off at people letting their dogs continually piss on his flowers and wasn’t worried about whom he might offend with his note!!
Piss is a crass word. I
Piss is a crass word. I wouldn't care to see it on signage it in my neighborhood either, but I wouldn't file a 311 about it. While we're on the topic: I have seen people let their dogs take a dump in people's front yards and businesses' flower beds which is wildly rude and entitled.
What word would you use?
Urinate?
Tinkle?
Water?
Take a leak?
Piddle?
Micturate?
None of the above. I don't
None of the above. I don't have a dog or a front yard so I wouldn't make a sign.
I prefer Number One or Numero Uno
.
It's obvious
I can't believe not a single person here mentioned the obvious word that should have been used:
pee
The word "pee" is clear, more likely understandable by children, less crass and angry-sounding than "piss", and still informal (unlike the medical-sounding terms).
As a child, I once went swimming (with permission) in the private pool of a very rich man whom I didn't really know. Apparently I wasn't the only pool-guest he let do that. I still remember the sign he had hanging over the pool: "I don't swim in your toilet bowl, please don't pee in my pool." Not exactly classy, but not obnoxious either, and it was effective (for me anyway).
Old school
I was always a fan of "make water". So quaint.
Drain the lizard
That's the only expression worth using.
A bit gendered
(Also if your dick keeps shedding its skin maybe see a doctor)
Tà Kaína Óneira...
And if the tail falls off; consult a herpetologist immediately.
Drain the clam
Or, the non-cisgendered Lose A Liter.
TIL
a new word: Micturate.
"Holy crap, I gotta micturate like a racehorse!"
but clearly
this person is really pissed off
I can understand being fed up
I can understand being fed up with folks letting their dogs urinate all over your yard.
Fed up is right
While I am all for reframing from foul language esp in public, I can certainly empathize with this homeowner. The frustration is completely justified.
A lot of dog owners are respectful and abide by common sense and decency. However over the last few years I have seen a growing number of dog owners with complete disregard of their surroundings when it comes to their dogs. The worst example of this was in prudential and Copley last March when someone’s large dog literally defecated all over the malls.
The poor cleaning crew was scrambling to clean up dog poop in front of the Copley Starbucks. I also notice a lot more dog poop around city streets compared to before. There should be fines and if you can’t clean up after your pet then you don’t deserve to have one!
There are fines.
I too, have noticed a recent increase in negligence on the part of some dog owners.
Maybe it’s time to assign some city workers to start issuing more fines.
While they are out there I’d be happy to see them also issue fines to smokers smoking in non smoking areas and parks and tossing their butts on the ground.
It's very frustrating as a
It's very frustrating as a city dog owner who always curbs and picks up after his dog. Gives us all a bad name. I picked up someone else's huge dog shit in front of my steps the other day when I went to take out my dog, right in the middle of the sidewalk.
Also shout out to the idiots who pick up thier shit, but leave the bags on other people's trash piles on pickup day. The garbage men won't take them so they get left behind and are usually stepped on and smeared around after pickup or end up in the street. So then we not only get shit, but shit covered plastic litter.
I am a responsible dog owner
I am a responsible dog owner and I wouldn't be surprised if the uptick you see is due to dog walkers. There are many responsible dog walkers but when I see someone walking 5-8 dogs I know there is no way they can pick up all that poo.
I do wish the dog hating zealots (and there are many on UHUB) would be just as outraged as the piles of trash left from humans...there is far more of that than dog poop:)
Just to be clear I am not condoning not picking up after your dog ...I just find it interesting that no one has the same intensity about the trash or cars polluting our lives.
Coming soon to a 311
Coming soon to a 311 complaint near you: Mommy? What does urinate mean?
Comma splice
Maybe you can explain what a comma splice is while you’re at it, it’s a good thing to teach your children.
I see what you did there....
I see what you did there....
If your kid is old enough to read
Then your kid will very likely know that word just from going to school or a playground.
Agree with everyone
It is a crass bit of phraseology, but I understand the frustration. I observe the same rude people ignore more elegantly worded, professionally made signs on a regular basis. Since dogs can’t read, it’s up to humans to take control of the leash and prevent them from urinating in the landscaping.
Don't ever go near souvenir shops with those twins
I think we were up in Bar Harbor once, passing a store, and one of my kids (much younger than they are now), said, "Daddy, what does 'shit' mean" after reading one of the "comical" signs in the window.
I think the worst thing that happened was I almost pissed my pants laughing. Or, sorry, I almost tinkled my pants...
The first question back was, "you haven't heard that word at school yet??"
Gee..
Who pissed in that Aghast Citizen’s cornflakes this morning?
who
"Micturated" in their cornflakes.
Dated
80s kids 'pissed'. Today, kids 'pee'.
I'm more offended
by the unnecessary box around the text. It's not even centered vertically.
Great - now I can’t unsee it.

Magoo sez
Magoo calls number 2 a “Stinky tinkle”. Magoo.
No idea what Magoo is about...
But "Tinkle" FTW!
