Robot patrols aisles of one Massachusetts Stop & Shop

The Washington Post reports a googly-eyed robot named Marty is now roaming the Stop & Shop in Seekonk, reporting spills and other problems - via a control center in the Philippines - at least until somebody knocks Mr. Smartypants over in a fit of rage or it kills itself like that robot in DC because people keep calling it Mahty or because it
quickly despairs of spending its life searching for fallen price signs.

Just another machine taking someone else's job. I get it, it helps. But staff your stores, not gimmicky robots. You know, stores used to stock stores during the day, so staff would be on the floor to see such things as spills. I guess those bean counters at Foodahold figured out its more cost effective to have robots and workers paid premium (for working overnights) than just having real staff to help people.
Just another reminder why I havent been in a Stop & Shop in a long time.
Japan
In Japan robots stock shelves at night. And wash windows on office buildings. They were also early adopters of smart phones. We can see where things are going.

Sometimes stuff like this isn't a good thing. There's alot of stuff they adopt, that we never do or never really takes hold.

So where do you shop?
I have no love for S&S but their prices and quality is way beyond Star/Shaw's. The latter charges Whole Foods prices for Poverty Extreme groceries.
Market basket is nice if you're near one (I'm not). Amazon stores are obviously too expensive by design.

Pardon the banal comment, but I actually don't find that Whole Foods is necessarily more expensive.
Sorry to shill for Bezos, but if you buy the store brand and sale items, you can do pretty well.

One thing I would like to see at Stop & Shop:
If a customer uses a self-checkout register, the customer should get an automatic discount on the order, since the customer is not utilizing the services of a human cashier/bagger.

What? are we telling jokes here.
Those bean counters at Foodahold have figured out we will pay the same whether a computer or a human checks us out. You reduce the real checkers, and just force people into using the self check outs.
But I agree. This is pure cost savings measure, so this should be passed on to the consumer.
Again, yet another reason why I don't shop here any more, all about rakin in the dough for the execs, not about providing a service.

Stop & Shop is all about running a bare-bones operation to extract every penny out of the suckers that do all the work themselves.

I thought that too, but then I remembered that about a third of the time the self-checkout doesn't work right, and I have to get help from an employee anyway.
Also the way their checkouts handle coupons (physical or digital-on-card) is annoying as hell. The robovoice says something like "dollar value zero" or "no discount" or something, and then maybe gives the discount at the end, maybe not.
BTW, why did the bigger CVS at Coolidge Corner get rid of their self-checkout and bring back cashiers? Anyone know?
Not a surprise
Stop & Shop's ultimate goal seems to eliminate all human workers and provide no service. They do everything they can to get you to scan yourself, bag yourself and check out yourself. They never have enough cashiers and half of the checkouts are self serve. Shelves are frequently poorly stocked. Forget a dedicated bagger at every or even most checkouts. How can Market Basket do the opposite and have lower prices, too? Wegman's does a much better job with service, too. I've stopped going to Stop & Shop except for picking up a few things when necessary.

I love the self checkout at stop and shop. I can literally be in and out with what I was looking for within minutes
