Until a few years ago, I did not realize that squirrels made nests like birds do. It feels stupid, even to me, but I thought they lived in tree hollows or something. Then I saw a bird building a nest.
Around here they use anything they can find to build them, including plastic bags. Looks like crap. You can see a bunch of them on the trees along the Minuteman bikeway.
I actually had dozens, no exaggeration, of rats nesting in my engine compartment. They would all run out in single file when I started the car, making counting them easy. Thanks Allston!
No amount of traps or the like kept them out.
Finally found a solution [so far] in the form of an ultrasonic noise maker that goes under the hood. It seems to have driven them away, until they figure out how to chew through it's power wire anyhow.
I wish you luck with the sonic solution. Has this problem become more widespread in the last few years, or am I just hearing about it more? We've had cold temperatures and warm engines and nasty little mammals forever...why so many invasions these days?

Squirrels don’t nest in cars.
But mice do.

Simply googling "squirrel nest in car" proves you wrong. Many times over.

Squirrel nests are called dreys.
In winter, several will share one. Taking turns on the inside to warm up.
Everything on the internet

Acton? Is the big oak tree still on 2 after the prison?
So do chipmunks
When I lived out that direction I had trouble with chipmunks nesting under my car hood and wreaking havoc.
So do snakes.

Yikes!

Are they that good
or are they just guessing it’s a squirrel nest. With a fire that big how can you tell it wasn’t a mouse, rat, duck or Wolverine?
