Globe seeks to extract more value from print subscribers before they all die off

We just got e-mail from the Boston Globe that they are raising our price for home delivery of the Sunday paper to $9.50 a week. What are other Globe subscribers seeing? Put that way because last time the Globe announced print increases, they seemed to have different rates for different people.

I got a note that seven-day delivery was going up to $20.20/week. Very festive of them, although I doubt next year's increase will go up to $20.21. In any case, had been thinking of dropping it for quite awhile and that email I got today was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back after decades of being a print subscriber.

I like the metro section and Garfield but $500 for the rest of that rag? Nope! I’ll stick to uhub

The Globe hasn't had Garfield in years (maybe never.)

They had it in the 90s. I read the funny pages almost every day as a kid and never understood that strip.

JUST the Sunday edition?

Although, to be fair, it also includes access to the Web site.

We get Sunday delivery + Digital and it's $4.50/week. Maybe because we signed up years ago for the education discount when one of us was in school? Commenting anonymously because I'm *not* going to pay $9.50/week for local columnists writing about national politics, Tom Brady news, and Jeff Jacoby.

Just kidding. He seems to be there just to create the appearance of balance.

The email I received raises my rate for Sunday delivery only to $4.50 per week.

$9.50??

What is the newsstand price for the Sunday edition?

$6- the people who work at the waning number of stores that still carry the newspaper make fun of me for spending $12 on the Globe and NY Times

We dropped the Sunday Globe after the last increase, mostly because we didn't even get it delivered 'til after 10. We just have the online subscription now.

Mine went up to $80.80 a month a couple of months ago, (7 days) and I'm finally thinking I should give up delivery.

Current rate of 7 day delivery is $65.60 for 4 weeks . Raising rate to $76.80. I decided to only receive the Sunday Globe.

Just call the old Morrissey Boulevard phone number and complain about the Trump coverage. They will offer the next 6 months for 99 cents. Once that expires, use boston.com for a few weeks and they will send you the "we miss you" email with a new six months for 99 cents. In one encouraging sign, the last time I needed to interact with the Globe customer service, the call was answered locally. For a while, the Dorchester number was answered in Manila, Philippines but it appears outsourcing is no longer necessary.

You've finally learned that there is only one "L" in Manila.

I got my note just before xmas... going up from $8.77 to $$11.50/wk for Sat/Sun and digital. ouch.
I spoke with them last Spring about their digital only prices $30/mo, being way higher than my NYT and WaPo digital subscriptions, $12.50 and $8.30/mo respectively.
Their story was those papers have the ability to charge more for various segregated sections of the site like cooking and whatever, and that the Globe doesn't yet have the technology to separate their site into various pay per section subscriptions.
We'll definitely cancel and wait for the call back price which we did last Summer etc..

$8.20 a week for Sunday home delivery, and NO digital access - will be cancelling

$11.70/week - just Sunday (plus digital). East Boston. Looks like I win!

They're including the cost of the tunnel tolls ...

Oddly, just a couple months ago, I saw an offer from the Globe for a 6 month online subscription for only a dollar, which of course I jumped on, which has been great. It sucks to miss out on the best local news coverage.

I pay $27.72 a month for digital-only access. That's about $6.93 a week, 89 cents a day. Good deal!
