Governor authorizes activation of 1,000 National Guards; the question is why

David Wade at WBZ reports that around 7 p.m., Gov Baker sent out a press release about an order to activate up to 1,000 National Guard personnel "in the event that municipal leaders require their assistance" but did not get more specific.

What's happening.

Could be preparation for tomorrow's weather.

They won't get it from Trump, so maybe there is some mutual aid between states going on?

Or maybe this is to protect hospitals from PPE raids by CBPinkertons?

Is that a handful of elites have everything, and we all struggle to have anything. So, it's time for us to get beaten.

Barr and Trump are planning to send CBP goon squads to "help" with voting and "maintain order" at polling places - in other words, harass voters who don't look white enough to vote.

MA has a late primary, so it is ripe for a "test run" just like PDX was invaded by jackass goon squads as a "test case"

There may also be concerns about stealing PPE from our medical facilities, too, as happened earlier in the year when administrators were harassed about shipments and MA had the stockpile under armed guard.

National guard at the ready to prevent such illegal election interference.

There isn't much point to Trump interfering with Mass elections. Nobody's expecting a Trump supporter to win any races here.

...once you grant the baseline level of insanity that is required to be a Trumpist, it wouldn't take much more insanity to think that Massachusetts cities would be a great place to do a little trial flexing.

Lots of dumb easily influenced college kids in a city that's not their home, so they don't care about it, potentially being encouraged by social media into rioting and suck at the whole social distancing thing = yeah.... might be want have the NG on standby so we don't get a repeat of what happened earlier in the year or the infamous Superbowl Riot or if we need field hospitals for the virus to quarantine all of them.

I doubt that being the reason. He clearly got a heads up on something though

You know the plan is to have these college kids around until Thanksgiving at the earliest, right? So is Baker just going to have the National Guard activated and ready for the next 2-3 months? What happened to "the government can't just pay people to sit around and do nothing"?

Using military force to quash sacred rituals of a Boston high holy day...smh...what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Brighton Ave to be born?

White nationalist terrorists start murdering people at protest marches.

Somebody’s got to stop the gangs of thugs in the streets teargassing and clubbing people with virtual impunity, kidnapping people and throwing them in unmarked cars. I’m sure Charlie is just looking out for us.

I mean, is there an actual danger or just vague "threats" from perceived chaos occuring in other cities?

Because holy s#@¡ does this feel like more of the same normalization of military amongst civilians that people will eventually just accept as the way things are.

One side will cheer for it shows the liberals will be brought to heel.

While the other claims they are to protect us from Barr's Boppers.

Dear god, we are in such a terrible, awful, no good, very bad shape.

Why is this being done as a precaution in advance of any real need?

Leaving the use of armed troops up to municipalities???

Not a lot (probably less than 30), but there are barricades pre-staged at Joy St and in front of the State House. There are not barricades at Bowdoin.

People who are in favor of the flu are rallying tomorrow at that location, beginning at 10 am.

Marc Lombardo, a Mass legislator who voted against banning the mental torture of "conversion therapy" gave this crazytown group a video as part of its Facebook page.

He apparently prides himself on his ignorance of public health. We are the in the midst of what could have escalated to the degree of the 1918 flu, or worse, and yet he argues public health be damned.

I wonder whether he opposed fluoridation, milk pasteurization and any other public health policy that saves lives?

We wouldn't have such a problem with people refusing to wear masks and get vaccines if we hadn't been so insistent about making them wear seatbelts 30 years ago.

He's calling them out to Storrow Drive on September 1. Isn't it terrorism to attack a bridge?

at the third monthly (Bicycle) Ride for Black Lives, which I participated in. We rode from Franklin Park through Roslindale (or was it Hyde Park?), Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury to Nubian Square.

That didn't last long, and was a preparation for violent protests that didn't happen:

Baker says National Guard can stand down, says activation was for protests
