The Boston Newspaper Guild reports 30 Herald reporters and photographers and circulation and advertising staffers will go without pay for between two and five weeks between Monday and June 30.
Has there been any furloughs (without pay) in the public sector ?
My friend works for an orthodontist and was furloughed , she has to use vacation and sick time, when that runs out I guess unemployment benefits?
What government services that you normally use would you like to stop being available because of furloughs? I know its easy to list ones you never use, we can all do that, Im asking for services you used you would be ok with eliminating.
My question was if they were furloughed without pay like a lot of private sector jobs.
I don't want anything shut down or anyone to lose their job, but that isn't the reality we're in.
No one furloughed yet, but it is coming. They have enough money to scrape by for the rest of the current fiscal year (Apr-May-Jun). State leadership has also been busy with the crisis. It would not surprise me if they ask the unions to work one day a week, without pay, for say 20 weeks. People would be paid in the next fiscal year. The alternative would be presented as a lot of layoffs. But Baker only supervises about 45,000 employees. He does not supervise public higher education, Legislature, Judiciary, AG, etc. Employees can't deny extent of the crisis and MA won't be able to raise much new revenue in this environment. An early retirement package is probably coming but there aren't many baby boomers left within that range. Federal money is probably coming at some point but it is hard to say how much.
The private sector is getting furloughed and laid off. Meanwhile no one is riding the MBTA or taking classes in the Massachusetts College system and there are no furloughs and layoffs. Next year the taxpayers will get soaked to pay for their pension programs which are on the verge of bankruptcy.

Magoo sez
Does this include Howie Carr? Magoo.
Damn you deep state...
This may impact his sales to griftable rubes.
Good riddance to the Herald.
Good riddance to the Herald. The good reporters will get picked up by the Globe.
That sucks

Not yet, but

The bell tolls
I love newspapers and desperately don’t want this to happen. But when will they stick a fork in the Herald and finally pronounce it done?
They had 30 people left
They had 30 people left working there?
Private vs Public

Incorrect
I know for a fact that UMass is holding classes - they're online rather than in person.
Say what you want about the Herald
and there is a lot to be said, but there are some really good reporters at the Herald like Sean Cotter and Erin Tiernan.
Kills me that their pay gets cut and Howie Carr still will draw a check to kiss Trump's ass and issue more racist screeds against Warren.
Had they doubled down on reporting
And not culture war fluff years ago maybe they wouldn't be one car ad away from elimination.
There was a time ...
when the Herald's reporting on news and events within the city of Boston was smart, on point, and often ahead of the Globe. Those days are sadly gone.
