Portsmouth rally canceled, allegedly due to threat from storm no longer forecast for the area
By adamg on Fri, 07/10/2020 - 2:49pm
President Trump told reporters today he wouldn't be flying to Portsmouth for a planned rally tomorrow because of "the big storm," the one that the National Weather Service said early this morning would no longer get anywhere near Portsmouth.
Chris Gloninger, a professional meteorologist at NBC Boston who got his meteorology degree at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, so he knows about Portsmouth, responded with the forecast for the originally scheduled time of the rally:

It's campaign news of HIS publicized event.
So it is news. Dull and short (mind, fingers), but still news. Sadly ANYTHING he does or doesn't do gets covered.
I think with poor weather, as stated elsewhere in the comments, it was to avoid a Tulsa situation. If the video from the rally isn't going to be any good for the press to run, or even embarrassing, then why bother? Trump supporters will stand almost any disappointment from their leader and be ready to show up later.
He's losing his lustre, but supporters are loyal. It's adorable.

Trump Lies. That's what he does for a living.
And to believe he has stopped lying since being elected is to ignore reality completely. And somehow he still has 30% of the country swallowing every word.
He has completely normalized his own insanity.
He has more than 30% of the country believing him!
45% of the American populace voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election. Part of the problem, however, is the fact that the Electoral College is still in place. Trump is not only a pathological liar, but he was criminally irresponsible in his attitude and responses towards the Covid-19 pandemic. He knew about it in December 2019, and in January of 2020, when the Covid-19 virus was still relatively easy to contain. In addition to firing the pandemic squad, who might've helped contain this virus and prevent much of what happened from happening, he deliberately lied to the American people and denied that the Covid-19 virus was as deadly as it was and that he'd contained it, when, in fact Trump had not contained Covid-19--at all.
You've got your President wrong
That would be President Xi Jinping. President Trump probably trusted the WHO at the time, meaning he knew nothing until late January, when was already traveling around the planet.
It's tough to find a world leader that makes Trump look good with Covid-19, but there's Xi and his bumbling that started the whole thing.
Are you kidding, Waquiot?
Donald Trump fired the all the members of the Pandemic preparation group who would've helped contain the Covid-19 virus. Nobody's saying that President Xi Jinping didn't bear responsibility for the Covid-19 virus becoming a pandemic, but Donald Trump helped make an already-bad situation far worse by his having fired the Pandemic preparation group, and by lying to the American people and saying that it was under control, when, in fact, it wasn't..
Waq-O
Dude, c'mon.
You're just being silly at this point.
January 3rd was the first written report in White House Briefing
Xi didn't bumble, he trained people to be scared of telling him bad news. This is a documented side effect of authoritarian rule. However that kind of rule was helpful in compelling citizens to go to fever hospitals when they tested positive.
Is this the point
Where you want me to track down those WHO reports downplaying the problem? Or that they didn't call it a pandemic until the end of January?
Sorry, folks, but this revisionism that absolves the Chinese government of blame with Covid is just bad.
did you understand what I wrote?
I didn't absolve China of anything.
However, do you depend on China for leadership, honesty or the health of the American people? Taiwan didn't. Blaming China for being China is pathetic The debatable failure of WHO isn't relevant either.
On December 31, 2019, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) became aware of cases in China and began developing reports for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on January 1. On January 3, CDC Director Robert Redfield was notified by a counterpart in China that a "mysterious respiratory illness was spreading in Wuhan [China]"; he notified HHS Secretary Alex Azar, who shared the report with the National Security Council (NSC). According to The Washington Post, warnings about the virus were included in the President's Daily Brief in early January, an indicator of the emphasis placed on the virus by the intelligence community.
The administration was notified. They were too lazy or dumb to respond.
Let's not do out typical thing
At the end of the day, you are Monday morning quarterbacking.
Of course, I'm still trying to wrap my head around your timeline. The CDC knew on the 31st of December, but were notified on the 3rd of January? The CDC probably took on face value the claim that there was no person-to-person transmission, which, as I note, was not declared as false until late January. Why would the White House react any different than every single government on the planet save one?
As for Taiwan, I have great respect for the Republic of China, their democratic government, and how they are responsive to their citizens. They also have better ears on the ground on the mainland than probably any other nation on the planet. They were most likely working on a response to an infectious disease before the WHO was informed of the situation. Again, there was no other nation on the planet that had a quicker response than they did. They have also been blocked from giving input into the pandemic. At the end of the day, if the early response to this is laid at the feet of any US agency, it would be the CIA. While they are not medical people, it's their job to keep an eye on dangers in the world.
President Trump probably
It's cute how you think that President Trump was actually listening to experts or making decisions informed by anything beyond what he saw on Tucker Carlson's show. Do you also believe in the Easter Bunny?
Not 45% of the people
Just those that voted. Don’t give him more credit. More than half didn’t vote and lass than half didn’t vote for him. He got around 22-23% of the eligible voters. Hardly a mandate (for the sake of his followers) and a sign to those that didn’t vote that they could have made a difference. Too important not to vote now.
No, they didn't
No, they didn't. Not even close to it.
The US population in 2016 was about 323 million. 43% of that would be 145 million. About 138 million people (58% of the eligible voting-age population) voted in the 2016 election in total. Of those, as best can be determined using verified voter records, 48% voted for Hillary Clinton and 45% voted for Donald Trump, for a total of 62 million, or a little less than 20% of the American populace.

His refusal to commemorate WW 1 US soldiers
Just like Trump's choice to ignore the the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. It was more important to him to avoid rainy weather than to recognize the 100th anniversary of soldiers of the United States who died in World War 1.
Today we have information that he ignored reports from his top information people that V. Putin of Russia was paying Taliban to specifically kill Americans.
Interesting comparison.
Did President rely on earlier "Flash Flood Warning" on UHub?
We know that in a rare overnight post, complete with ominous satellite imagery, UHub warned of a Flash Flood Watch issued by NWS for the entire state of MA through Saturday.
If President Trump relied on UHub or his own National Weather Service, postponing the event was prudent. With over one million MA voters choosing President Trump in 2016, no doubt many would have been forced to decide whether to travel through a potential catastrophic weather event or stay home. Although the meant-to-be serious politics here are often funny, the same UHub editor now puts "the big storm" in sarcastic air quotes to belittle President Trump, apparently because he relied on the same forecast that prompted the alarming UHub post earlier. I believe whatever network Jimmy Kimmel is hiding from has an opening for "comedy".
Just curious
Fish, what do you think the smallest rally Trump has ever held during the 2016 campaign or since?
I mean other than his inauguration.
I am generally curious what a Trump supporter would estimate was the fewest people to come out in support and where and when.

A few thousand if that.

This story of competing head counts is not uncommon...
I have no idea what Trump's smallest rally was but he seems to fill most venues when supporters can get there without hassle. I have seen Biden speak in near empty school gyms, rarely drawing a crowd. I also tend to believe that the enthusiasm in this race favors Trump over Biden. I have observed high ranking police officers and Chiefs make random crowd guesstimates later published as Gospel by the media when in fact, the officer had no clue. Popular Mechanics delves into the difficulties of accurate crowd estimating here.
We've spent millions on "Turn Around Don't Drown" and other flood safety programs so if there was so much as a fender-bender involving a Trump supporter enroute to the rally in the rain, every satellite truck would converge on the scene to document the paint transfer or broken taillight as Trump "endangers more lives." I enjoyed a text earlier claiming CNN and MSNBC execs are furious at having to destroy pre-recorded segments showing that the Trump rally caused a Covid surge. It's not too far-fetched by today's standards.

Ok, so is that by design? Do you think he goes places where the advance team can't assure him of a nearly full venue? Or do you think he cancels or sends a minion or a son instead...but only after finding out if anyone is likely to show?

Here's the thing: it may well be that the rally was called off due to the weather forecast. But there's no way to say for sure based solely on the fact that Trump said so. His relationship with the truth is one of total disinterest. He says whatever he thinks will benefit him at any given moment, which once in a while happens to line up with reality. Again, no way to tell without more information.
