All the best spots were taken today

It was turtles, turtles everywhere at Jamaica Pond today, at least on the one downed tree limb that is the premier turtle lounging spot.

I wonder if the turtles have
I wonder if the turtles have an online reservation system for spots on the log.
Sounds Like...
a Sturgill Simpson song.
i must know for science
What do turtles use as space savers?
They just wait
Wait until a kayaker goes by. Some of them freak and leave and the others spread out while jeering at the scaredy turtles who flinched.
Some are more fearsome than fearful
I was kayaking on the Charles the other day, fairly near the Boston shore, and I noticed something that I had just avoided hitting as I went by. I took a closer a look, and it was a turtle the size of a hubcap, about three feet away. There's only one kind of turtle around here that gets that big, and I didn't want to be anywhere near it. I took off as fast as I could paddle, hoping nobody noticed me, fleeing for my life from a large turtle.
Lookout for the swans
The last year the Herring Run and Paddle went off in person we had an aggro swan by the Medford Whole Foods who knocked a guy off his paddleboard. Dude was enraged and attacking everything. His Queen was atop their giant nest. On the way back down river, a paddle boarder waited for me to catch up so I could put the less enraging kayak between him and Aggro DaddySwan.
I once wandered a little too close to a Canada goose nest
The other goose came flying at me out of the river, and I high-tailed it out of there. It gave a whole new meaning to the expression "wild goose chase".
Snapping turtles are a lot less aggressive in the water
On land, where they're vulnerable, they're very pugnacious. A glance at their lower shell will tell you why: they're exposed and can't pull into their shells as other turtles do. Their only defense, once they're noticed, is to act like assholes.
But in the water, they quickly flee from anything they perceive as a threat. They become big scaly chickens. Of course, they're still predators, and will attack birds, fish, and anything else they think they can eat. But a boat? They won't go near that.
If you're in Plymouth County, the red-bellied turtle gets almost as big. It's essentially an overgrown painted turtle, and comes out on logs and what not to bask in the sun, which snapping turtles never do. Unfortunately, it's an endangered species.
Awww...
...this photo is beautiful and made my day...can't explain why, but it's wonderful!
It's turtles all the way down
It's turtles all the way down that log.
Obligatory
Parade
Those turtles are celebrating Patriots Day with a parade. They appear to be the only ones who remember, since the observance was long ago submerged in adoration of a footrace.
That's correct.
And in one of the closest races ever, a turtle was actually leading until the very end, when she was just edged out by a hair.
What do you call a group of turtles?
A Shell Station!
Did
You notice the commotion around Pond St last night at that time? There were BPD, firetrucks, 2 ambulances, and a few staties there around that time. I didn't see what the cause was though.
