An artist at work with a huge audience this morning on Storrow Drive
By adamg on Thu, 12/02/2021 - 9:04am
Nothing like a good storrowing to start the morning commute, as Log shows us, with a snap of a freshly peeled box truck at the Fairfield Street pedestrian bridge. Traffic, of course, quickly backed way, way up.

WE’RE NOT WORTHY
WE’RE NOT WORTHY!!!
Yes, yes, yes! So much bad news in the world, but inshallah we’ll always have Storrow. *Chef’s kiss,* 10/10. Thank you kind truck driver, thank you!
On which day of Christmas do we get …
… ___ number of Storrowerers Storrowing?
…and a partridge in a pear tree.
What’s inside?
Any one in the vicinity?
Any guesses?
One panicked moron.
One panicked moron.
Not good enough for me
Now that I saw the masterwork that was the truck up on two or three wheels a week or so back, a Storrowing with all 4 wheels on the ground disappoints.
This is more of a Rothko style
Minimalist but still bold. It's not going to please everyone but that's not the goal.
I give it a solid 8.
Agreed. The unmarked container piques my curiosity.
The mystery factor adds to the score even if wheels remain on the pavement.
Nailed it
Extra points for nailing the clearance sign.

Yeah.
I remember my first Storrowing. As an observer, not a participant. It was a Full Sardine. Nearly blew me off the bridge, it was so spectacular!
Doesn't usually happen that
Doesn't usually happen that far into the city does it?
Were there any pedestrians
on the pedestrian bridge? That would certainly put a jog in your morning jog.
Ask and you shall receive

Truck doesn't even look that
Truck doesn't even look that full, given the peek we are offered into its interior. Assuming they packed it from front to back, it looks less than half full.
But hOw wIlLL aNyThiNg gEt dELiVeRed wiThoUt tRucKsZ?
I wasn't prepared
for the phrase "freshly peeled box truck". Great way to start the morning. :-D
They say all the fiber, vitamins and minerals…
… are in the peel. Good for exhaust-ion but can make you gassy though too.
There needs to be a
There needs to be a livestream camera pointed right at that spot.
Right?
http://11foot8.com/ shouldn't get to have all the fun!
Let's look at root cause analysis
In WWII, the Army Air Force hired young psychologist Alphonse Chapanis to improve training for B-17 pilots, because, to paraphrase the brass, "these morons keep crashing our planes due to pilot error, in particular retracting the flaps while on final approach to land."
Chapanis, (again simplifying a bit) took a look at the cockpit and said, approximately, "Yes, there are idiots involved, but they're sitting back at the designers' desks, not in the pilot seats. Some idiot put the landing gear switch (which pilots need to activate on final approach) right next to the flap switch, and made the two switches identical."
And thus was born modern human factors engineering.
If you're getting a never-ending string of truck-to-bridge accidents on one road, just maybe the problem isn't that drivers suddenly become stupid when they approach that particular road; maybe it's something else? Like, maybe in the (extensively documented here and elsewhere) lack of adequate, actionable signs and warning devices.
(a decent read: https://humanisticsystems.com/2018/02/25/human-factors-and-ergonomics-lo...)
I think the lesson to be gained in both …
… the piloting of fast planes and fast land vehicles is that neither engineers nor operators nor the fools that regulate them have evolved to the point of understanding speed the way hummingbirds and roadrunners have.
That's not the only possible inference
You could infer that the designers are idiots, and the drivers aren't, but you could just as well infer that the designers are very clever, and have designed a particularly effective idiot-net.
Counterpoints
1. See eeka's link to 11foot8. Idiots run the red light to smash that one. Idiots ignore a half mile of signs and warnings to smash it. They also ignore all the flashing lights and audible warnings.
2. Storrow doesn't belong there - there is no way to stop this, and it is going to flood anyway. Best get rid of it.
Storrow
Storrowings are the most charming thing about Boston and the only thing “from Boston” worthy of celebrating, so please don’t take away Storrow.
How’s about The Storrow Theme Park?
Family friendly and all that.
Or a video game for the shut ins?
I'll see your root-cause analysis
and raise you a "this situation is acceptable, so no remediation is required".
I'm serious! It's quite possible that the city and/or state have decided that any fix would not be worth it. People aren't getting badly injured in these accidents, insurance covers any damage, and the bother of people getting stuck in a traffic jam can just be written off.
What about damage to the bridges?
That might add up to something serious or dangerous over time.
