Judge clears way for trial of BC student for boyfriend's suicide

Inyoung You will face trial for manslaughter on allegations she prodded her boyfriend to throw himself off a garage roof in 2019, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

However, while Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine Roach said prosecutors could try her on the legal theory of “manslaughter by commission,” that her words led to Alexander Urtula's action, she told prosecutors they cannot also seek to convince a jury that part of her guilt is through "manslaughter by omission," that she failed to seek help for him even though she knew he was about to try to kill himself.

On May 20, 2019, 90 minutes before he was due to graduate from Boston College, Urtula threw himself off the top of Northeastern University's Renaissance Garage, near the Ruggles T stop, as the culmination, prosecutors charge, of a tempestuous 18-month relationship with You. Throughout their relationship, prosecutors charge, You bombarded Urtula with abusive demands and threats, in part through tens of thousands of text messages. Towards the end, they say, she pressed him to kill himself.

Prosecutors say You tracked Urtula's whereabouts on the morning of May 20, and went to the garage to watch him jump.

Innocent, etc.

I think this recent trend of prosecuting people for telling someone to commit suicide sets a bad precedent. What this woman did is heinous, yes. Evil, yes. But illegal? By this logic, every time somebody tells somebody to "drop dead", or the old schoolyard taunt of my youth "go jump in a lake", they should be arrested. Now, the fact that she watched him jump and did nothing is a different story entirely, and I agree she should be prosecuted for that.

What is different about this specific case and telling someone to “go jump in a lake”, I wonder?
It’s almost as if there was months of verbal abuse that ended with a grave consequence. No, it’s definitely the same as “drop dead, pal!”

The woman should not have been so abusive, if she knew that her boyfriend would take it literally. The whole idea of "words will never hurt me" has been reduced to a bunch of malarkey.

No one should be abusive.

What if she was on the phone with him encouraging him to commit suicide-- but not watching. Would that be OK, not OK? Seriously, if you're too dumb to understand the crime being committed by encouraging someone to commit suicide, please consider killing yourself.

No death penalty for anyone, especially ghoulish penalties.

This is a more a big issue on our legal system and it sets a bad precedent. A clear case of the prosecutor wants to make a name for herself. The prosecutor said that she went to the building to watch him jump. That is not true as she call his brother to find him and went to find him once he turn on the GPS. He jumped once he saw her in the parking lot. Was she evil not sure. Was it a toxic relationship and was she abusive likely. However, this is not a criminal case.
