Makes sense, companies have so much stock of seasonal supplies but seemingly blew through the summer stuff because of the new outdoor craze... I saw school supplies for back to school in May lol
It's all one thing now
It's pretty much just one year round "holiday season" now. Especially as far as the merchants are concerned. I knew this was the case when I started seeing commercials on the Hallmark Channel featuring Jack-o-Lanterns with Santa hats on. It's so common now that I'm not even sure why anyone feels shock at it anymore.
Gotta keep that "Seasonal" aisle filled with something
Most stores now have a "Seasonal" aisle with junk appropriate for a given time of year. (Right now they should have coolers, ketchup and unfrozen ice pops.) The "problem" is that after the 4th of July, the next holiday with lots of themed consumables is Halloween. I'm not defending this, by the way....
Star Market in Packard's Corner
One time years ago I was in the Star Market in Packard's Corner in July, probably right around this time of the month, walking through the seasonal section as a manager was giving directions to a stocker to start putting out the dorm supplies.
The stocker was like, "But it's mid-July. The students don't move in until the last week of August."
And the manager said, "I know. But we sold out the summer stuff, and we can't have empty shelves. So we have to put out the next season's stuff to fill it, and that's the dorm supplies."
I know from working retail....
Most retail stores do not have any storage space "in the back," so if something's out of stock on the shelf, they really are out of stock until the next truck comes in.
When seasonal stuff like candy, decorations, summer furniture, Christmas tinsel etc. arrive from the manufacturer several months early...there is NO "in the back" to store it until the correct season so it goes out on the sales floor almost as soon as it arrives.
I've also seen that stores have to order seasonal stuff stupid early, which means that sometimes the stores guess wrong on what will be popular for a particular season.
That Halloween candy? Was most likely ordered back in April. The place where I work is right now looking at Christmas and Valentine's Day ordering.
Then maybe the manufacturer
Then maybe the manufacturer shouldn't send stuff so early.

Hallmark is doing the "Christmas in July" thing now as are the shopping channels and it gives me anxiety about Christmas shopping and I don't need that for half the damned year.
Now it's Halloween in July. Or maybe that's for next Easter.
That's part of the problem right there
Christmas shopping should not be anxiety-inducing. People need to reimagine Christmas shopping into something more joyous, or scale it back massively as to be manageable and meaningful. No need to thank me for this life-coach advice.
PS-don't watch the shopping channels. :-)

It was the last day of school, and I watched the bus go by my house and drop off some very happy children.
Simultaneously, a commercial came on the TV for "Back to School Supplies"
It would have made a great Dave Berg strip for Mad Magazine.
Early removal too
One of the more hilarious aspects of putting out "seasonal" item so soon before a holiday is that they REMOVE them equally early. Try finding specific Christmas items in the last two weeks before Christmas. They have been removed from the display shelves and haphazardly (and depressingly) thrown onto a "clearance sale" table to make room for Valentine's Day items.
Summer was over
on July 5th. At least that’s what my parents used to say.
Reese's Shapes
To be fair, the holiday Reese's (pumpkins here) are the best form of Reese's cup, so I'd be happy to see those at any time of the year.
People will eat these all year round
They would make good energy and salt-replacement boosts after a long hot bike ride ... except that they also melt easily.
