Boston Restaurant Talk reports Cathedral Station on Washington Street is apparently staying open and that a proposed pot shop would actually be going in next door.
Ugh, this is bad news. Cathedral station wasn’t my favorite place but was the perfect meeting spot to grab a drink and see friends. And the staff was friendly and convenient for us south end folks. I guess it’s time to move to Dorchester…
What was the name of the place there prior to 1993ish? Used to walk by and there would be steam rolling out the door in the winter from everyone dancing their arses off inside.
The doc about the decline of gay bars in the South End should be called When Strollers Attack.
The treend does seem to be more along the lines of "LGBTQ themed" or more blended in general. More places are having drag nights or other LGBTQ style activities and on the other side Jaques has become less of a gay bar and more of a bridal party destination.
There is still Club Cafe and The Alley Bar and both seem pretty secure in where they are. In Dorchester you have the neighborhood gay"ish" bare like Dbar and Blend which clearly cater to the community but it's not uncommon to see everyday folk too.
The South End just costs too much money to keep a scene that really depends on young people to stay afloat. Older folks (I'm 41 and include myself in that) will go out but less often and won't drink nearly as much. That young crowd hasn't settled in a new home yet , and may never , but at the moment Dorchester seems to be the place that people are attracted to.
the lawyers chimed into a discussion on FB. There is no 'next door' - since the Cathedral building is 1222, people are assuming 1220 'must be' the outdoor patio. The lawyers added to just such a FB discussion to say it is Cathedral they want to use as a location.
But the conflict continues. Employees insist they have asked management and confirm it is NOT closing. Meanwhile, another unconfirmed source says the lase is coming up and Cannabis is throwing all kinds of money at the LL.
Maybe I'm behind on my zoning laws regarding these shops but I thought you had to have a secured lease agreement or ownership of a location before applying and being granted the license? Maybe I'm off base here but I could have sworn that was one of the concerns when it came to equity, that the process takes so long and it drains the pockets of smaller players while they wait.

Herbie's Ramrod Room, The Citadel (which was lesbian).
Where do all these liquor licenses go? And the ones from Roxbury, Roslindale, Dorchester?
Ah, and Somewhere
For the ladies in PO Square!

Seems they're not closing; somebody put the wrong address (or maybe the two storefronts share the same street number) for the pot shop.
The rewrite leads me to a question
Is there a gay sports bar in the South End?
It "is" closing
