Tremont Street somewhere in the South End
is my guess, based on the architecture and the destination signs. Could also be in Lower Roxbury behind Northeastern University. This was one of the routes served by the now-unused outer platforms at Boylston station.

...Because it looks the same today. South End. Tremont St at Union Park St, to be exact.
My question would be
Which high school did these boys attend?

I had it in my head that they moved sooner. The trolley stock would probably mean pre-1922.
They definitely were at the old Latin location.
Center Entrance Cars
Came into the fleet in 1915 and some lasted until 1953, so this could have been any time during that timeframe. The 40 ran along Tremont St between the subway and Egleston North Station, at least in 1936. Foster Palmer described the cars as "crowd swallowers" when they served the World Series at Braves Field. They were probably supplemental school services which ran between Egleston and the subway for transfers elsewhere in the City, although I wonder how many students would have just walked over to the El.
Upon further review
English took over the site when they left, so if it is a later year, it's Latin's arch rivals.

My grandfather went to Boston Latin from 1925-1929 ish. He lived in the Chelsea though. Hmmmmm

Washington Street at Massachusetts Avenue is my guess.
500 Block of Tremont st
Looks like. The taller building on the left side of the photo looks to be 550 Tremont where I lived in the mid 60's. I remember the trolly tracks were still on Tremont when I was a kid but no trollys.
