Bicyclist killed in Allston crash

The Boston Cyclists Union reports the death of Samuel Alvarado, 21, hit by a garbage truck at Cambridge and Hano streets in Allston Tuesday morning.

This tragic crash highlights two key dangers that people who bike face: Unsafe roadways and large trucks. Safety improvements for this area are long overdue - as are safety improvements for large vehicles that are driven on our streets.

Samuel should be alive today.

WBZ reports the truck driver remained on scene.

I always give garbage trucks a wide berth because their drivers are very unpredictable. They make lots of sudden turns and often back up at high speed without looking.

I thought I remembered another cyclist who got right-hooked and killed by one in a hit-and-run a few years back around Kenmore/BU(?) but I couldn't find it on a quick internet search.

Edit: It was Kanako Miura, who died 10 years ago, and it was a recycling truck.

The vehicle, which witnesses said resembled a garbage truck...

No, it doesn't imply anything at all. I made no suggestion of what happened in the Allston crash because I was not there and haven't heard any details yet.

I merely mentioned that garbage trucks are high on my personal list of top traffic hazards because of past near misses and I figured it might be helpful to other cyclists.

I bike everyday to work and take the left off Brookline Ave onto the reverse direction bike lane on Parkway.

Just this morning I noticed the garbage truck taking that right completely block the bike lane before I turned. They’re higher up and can’t judge the distance to the parked cars correctly.

It’s a good reminder to be extremely cautious around them.

When will driver's start being cautious? Maybe when they get charged with vehicular homicide? When will truck manufacturers pay for easy design changes that will eliminate blind spots and prevent death?
