City offers grants for fun summertime activities to help curb violence

Boston is offering up to $7,000 grants to groups in neighborhoods with problems with violence to run events at their local parks.

The Summer Activation Mini-Grant program is a continuation of the former "Save R Streets" program, which was best known for an annual basketball tourney at Jeep Jones Park.

Eligible groups include neighborhood associations, non-profit groups and tenant groups at housing projects that want to "activate" their local parks and other community gathering areas with events between June 26 and Sept 1.

The grants are limited to specific areas in which the city has identified particular crime issues, based on BPD data, including Talbot Avenue, Dudley Street, Harambee Park, Roberts Playground, Ross Field, Mildred Hailey apartments and Orchard Gardens apartments.

Proposals need to be submitted by May 22.

I wonder how much it would cost to host some big SummerThing-like events from the 1970s?

Like the one in Harvard Stadium with Janis Joplin or the one in White Stadium with Graham Central Station, Parliament/Funkadelic, Richard Pryor and lots of local acts as well. Guess which one I was at. ;)

Kevin White sure knew how to keep the neighborhoods cool in the summer time.

Like this current suggested program there were lots of individual neighborhood smaller events but just as fun as the big ones. It's nice not ot have to go very far for quality live entertainment.

to non-profits which will serve as political organizing auxiliaries for Wu.

Unless we're talking about youth sports leagues, established summer arts programs and day camps, this money will go into pockets.

$7000 is cheap compared to the cost of mayhem in the streets.

You need to learn a whole lot about how these grants are tracked, too.
