Eat pork or die

Kelly Ayotte continues to run against Massachusetts in her campaign to become governor of New Hampshire. Now she's foaming at the mouth about the Massachusetts humane-farming law that bars the sale or shipment of pork products from inhumanely raised pigs.

"Hey Mass, HANDS OFF OUR BACON," she blares.

New Hampshire is 43rd in the U.S. in pork production, behind even Massachusetts - whose humane-farming law (which also affects egg production) mirrors one in California, which the Supreme Court upheld earlier this year (Midwestern pig farmers, though, then sued Massachusetts anyway).

New Hampshire conservatives are hypocrites to the max. You can only buy hard liquor from state facilities. They toll the heck out of people coming and going from NH. They depend on MA people to come over the border and spend money . They get scores of people crossing the border to work in MA every day. I love that NH has its own image and it is welcome to protect it but it gets silly when they try to act like they are somehow better than MA because of whatever the reason is this week. Like it or not they are part of the same territory as Boston , they just happen to have a different state. It is kind of like northern New Jersey and Western CT with NYC. Sure they are not IN NYC but seriously, they are part of the territory and have the economies they do because of it.

Is that there is a possible issue for New Hampshire because much of New England's pork (well, outside of Connecticut, only half of which is really in New England) comes via warehouses in Massachusetts, and if the Mass. law applies to pork products that are shipped through here, then there might be an issue for people who buy pork products north of the Merrimack.

But she didn't scream it like that - she made it sound like Mass. Department of Agriculture agents are flocking into New Hampshire and shutting down Granite State pig farms, which, shocker, they're not.

Three miles north of the Merrimack is still Massachusetts. Don't lump the good people of Methuen, Haverhill, Merrimac Amesbury, and Salisbury into NH.

She's flip it around and say Massachusetts's restrictions on pork means the distributors will move to NH from MA and that's more money and jobs for her state.

It's that their argument about MA taxes -- it only helps NH.

Crisis of opportunity

If she were smarter, she'd use this opportunity to tell her potential supporters that she has a plan to bypass MA and build out a NH food hub to rival MA's so they could bypass our silly regulations and in the process create tons of new jobs (construction, food distribution, etc.) in NH! Think of all the pork companies that would love to use them instead of us to distribute if it means getting around our costly regulations!
