Casual fine-dining place with Canadian flavour wins approval on Boylston Street

Correction: The new Cactus Club is not Tex-Mex.

The Boston Licensing Board today approved plans for a new Tex-Mex casual restaurant at 500 Boylston St., better known to TV viewers as the location of Denny Crain's office in "Boston Legal."

Aside from the name, Cactus Club Cafe has no connection to the old Cactus Club, which served Tex-Mex fare on Boylston Street, but at the other end, in a building owned by Berklee College.

The Canadian-flavoured outlet will serve food to fans of "casual fine dining," its attorney, Patricia Farnsworth, told the board at a hearing yesterday. The restaurant will be the chain's first American location, eh.

Part of the board's vote included approval of its plan to buy the liquor license of the now defunct Ashmont Grill in Dorchester.

As part of its approval, the board required the chain to parlay with the Boston Transportation Department on a plan for handling parking for Uber Eats, DoorDash and other third-party food deliverers.

Board Chairwoman Kathleen Joyce said she particularly appreciates how the restaurant will "activate" a long dormant part of the building's first floor, but that some sort of third-party-food parking plan is vital for that particular stretch of Boylston Street.
