All the votes on comments deleted

If you're a frequent visitor, you may notice the site's been either wicked slow or down a fair amount over the last week or so. And now all the thumbs-up votes on comments are all gone (although voting still works, so new votes will be tallied).

In trying to figure out the former, I did the latter.

The site periodically does some maintenance in the background, including stuff related to the vote counts, which are kept in a table that had gotten really large as lots of people vote on lots of comments. It got to the point where the maintenance task was taking an increasingly long time, long enough to still be running when the next scheduled maintenance time came around, which caused more problems and it just got worse and worse. I purged the two tables that deal with votes. There are probably other issues going on, so now to try to find them.

My apologies, both for the slowdowns and for removing the vote tallies.

In the best traditions of CNE and CIKFR. Will we not need to vote anymore with the next update?

...you don't NEED to do anything on this site.

Hmmmm, Magoo does not thrive on the thumb up tally and resultant dopamine hit nor does Magoo thrive on mean meanies that say mean things about Magoo. Magoo just wants to handout smiley smiles via smiley comment such as what Magoo is commenting right now. Magoo has pocketfuls of smiles that Magoo thusly gives them out freely. :-). Magoo.

I remember on one post for the Orange Line shutdown in late May - early June, I got over 1200 likes. I said, "I'm popular - but not that popular!"

Who's counting those?

Was it anything to do with the CrowdStrike kerfuffle @adamg?

Adam runs this site on shoestrings and gum.

(And I don't blame him)

But at least a subset should work with the "Filtered" text editor here.

As for OpenStreetMap, yes! I'm planning on moving to that when I (finally) upgrade the Drupal here, either to Drupal 10 or to a Drupal 7 fork called Backdrop (Drupal 10 is good because it's the Latest and Greatest, Backdrop is good because it's far less complex on the back end, and as a single-person shop I don't really need all the enterprise stuff Drupal 10 has/requires).

As for your earlier hosting question, UHub is hosted at Pair.com, on a leased Linux server (don't ask me which specific Linux, my mind is shot right now so I don't remember).

I had a wordpress for a while that was on a linux server over at Dreamhost. I wanted to have access to the command line and the back end so I had full control.

It just got to be too much to manage. Between constantly getting worms and just having to update the damn thing every week to keep it up to date. So I gave up.

So more power to you for keeping this alive. CMS systems are a pain in the ass.
