Bicyclist seriously injured in Charles Circle crash; Dump-truck driver tells troopers who caught up with him he didn't even know he hit someone

Crushed bicycle still by the side of the road

Passerby took this photo of the mangled bike still by the side of the road about 25 minutes later.

A woman bicycling through Charles Circle at Cambridge and Charles streets was hit by the driver of a dump truck who kept going - until he was flagged down by state troopers around 8:30 a.m. yesterday.

She was taken, with serious injuries, to Mass. General on the other side of the Red Line stop, State Police say. Boston Police officers, who were first on the scene, said she was conscious when they got to her.

According to a State Police spokesman:

Driver stated he did not see the bicyclist, or immediately notice a crash but did eventually stop. He did cooperate with Troopers who responded to the crash scene.

seems to have about a 99.999% success rate when explaining to the law that you shouldn't be inconvenienced very much just for hitting somebody. If hitting someone with a car or truck is even illegal, which I'm still not quite sure of

If hitting someone with a car or truck is even illegal

Perfectly legal, unless you are shitfaced, in which case you may need a lawyer to make it legal.

"Never saw her" is the gold standard defense. But if that's not sufficiently credible they will also accept "she came outta nowhere".

Attempted negligent homicide.

How do we not know this derelict's name yet?

He's not arrested??

He admitted his guilt!

"Attempted negligent homicide" isn't a thing--if it was "attempted" that means someone was trying to do it, which is the opposite of "negligent."

"Depraved indifference," maybe--that's if someone should have known that their action might hurt or kill someone, and went ahead and did the thing anyway.

Careless and distracted drivers get away with far too much, because people seem to identify with the driver who negligently killed or injured someone, and not with the victim or their family, but there is a lot of room between "he probably didn't mean any harm, you can't expect drivers to pay attention all the time" and "he was trying to kill someone."

A similar hit and run happened 11 years ago at Charlesgate and Beacon. The driver was quickly absolved and wasn’t punished in any way for killing someone or driving off after doing so. Will anything be different this time? Probably not.

In Cambridge a garbage truck backed over a pedestrian in a crosswalk. There was a trial, but the jury let them off because earbuds were found under the body.

Waddya say we wait and see what the investigation turns up? I betcha there's lot of cameras and witnesses. If it turns out the truck driver was in the wrong, by all means light him up.

She may have thrown herself into the tread of the tires...we should wait to find out how innocent the driver is.

She might have been wearing dark clothing.
