Snake at Millennium Park

A snake found some old concrete and asphalt chunks a good place to do some sunning at the kayak launch in Millennium Park in West Roxbury this afternoon.

The common garter snake. It has a variety of different color variations: some, like this one, are more or less black with longitudinal yellow stripes, but others show a checkerboard pattern between the stripes and still others have red or orange bits.

I like snakes. I was lucky enough to have one living in my vegetable garden one summer. I'm sure it kept the rodents down, and even if not, hey - it's pretty and harmless.
