Bald eagle perched on tree along the Muddy River

Along with all the ducks and geese, a bald eagle perched up in a tree along the Muddy River today, surveying the geese paddling down below in the oil-infused water, near the pedestrian bridge over the Green Line to Carlton Street.

I've seen a few hawks around town lately, but haven't spotted one of those beauties yet. I wonder if these larger birds of prey are getting more common since the goose population has exploded. Bet they're tasty :-)

They probably don't mess with the adult geese - way too large, too heavy to carry, and mean.

Small ones are another matter. I was out paddling once when a duck with ducklings was swimming a few feet off my bow. The resident bald eagle divebombed the family. I don't think it was a successful raid - the ducklings were old enough to duck dive - but it was rather unnerving.

They're probably content with pigeons anyway.

P.S. Kudos on "Eagle Snacks"

They probably enjoy the occasional gosling or duckling snack, as Swirly has witnessed, but Bald Eagles mostly eat fish.

PS - The Duckling Snacks would make a good name for a band.

There's been a bald eagle hanging out around Mother Brook in Dedham too lately.
