the news that the Rockwood was closing was the first time I'd heard it existed.
As someone who still gets out to see live music regularly, I miss having alt-weeklies and local biweekly publications with concert and club listings in one place.
I only knew it existed because someone local to my town had a show there and the press release made it sound like a huge club so I had to google it. It sounded pretty cool but not a huge club haha. I do remember thinking that maybe the rent in that spot would be too high.
A major issue with the arts that are not major acts is that downtown districts have become so expensive that it is all but impossible to operate within so many miles of the city without going mainstream and big. All of that eccentric and offbeat music and entertainment can't exist in the city like it used to.
Unfortunately the only other option is to move to a less expensive zip code. This is a problem though because these zip codes are not central and not easily accessible to a large swath of people. Back in the gritty days Boston proper was much less safe but at least it was the middle of the spoke and wheel system allowing people to venture in and for the artists and others to be close to their art.
As someone who used to go to a lot of shows and club nights, then left Boston for a decade, then came back, I am really missing the valuable service the alt-weeklies used to provide. Drop the “night czar” and resurrect Phoenix and the Weekly Dig!!
which used to run long ago on Thursdays, and was as comprehensive as the Phoenix (but with less useful advertising). I was in a focus group about Living/Arts at the Globe a few weeks ago, and I mentioned this to them.

Sorry to see any music venue close, but

WMBR
It doesn’t have everything, but the concert reports on the WMBR website are an excellent resource for upcoming shows.

Ooh, that's good to know about! I have always
valued MBR's on-air concert reports as a resource, but I can't always catch them while I'm working.
Looking for nightlife
Thanks, great tip.

And the Globe Calendar section
