Reports coming in from all over (Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, the rest of the Boston area and southern New Hampshire) of some shaking around 10:25 a.m.
The USGS reports a 3.9 quake 11 miles off York Harbor, ME (tell USGS about your quake experience).
Nick reporgts his Rick Porcello bobblehead suddenly started "going nuts."

I thought it was a huge gust of wind
....but then I looked out and the trees were hanging limp, so I figured it must be a big truck rumbling by since it's also trash day. Glad there wasn't any damage.
Felt it in Northampton
Not the first of my life, though. We get periodic small earthquakes in the Connecticut valley, maybe once a year or so. This felt like a heavy freight train going by -- I live about 60 feet from the Conn Line tracks.
Felt here in Canton and
Felt here in Canton and confirmed by coworkers in Upton and Watertown.
Dear Proprietor,
You should be proud that so many people turn to your site and socials first for local breaking news. You've built an indispensable resource.
Chelsea
yeah same for me in Chelsea..
I felt it while sitting at my desk in my office and was like "oh the neighbor's washing machine is off balance again". Cuz when its overloaded, it'll shake things up in my living room.
Shook my house front to back, which I thought it was odd cuz when the washer shakes, its confined to my living room and I can't feel it in my office.. This time I felt it in the chair. I didn't hear the machine going so I checked USGS's website a minute or so after, didn't see anything so just assumed it was a fluke.
Until someone a few minutes ago text'd me and asked me about it LOL
I'd say it shook for at least 10-15 seconds. It was quite long (longer than the washer, which only shakes for 1-2 seconds.)
same!
I ALSO thought it was an off-balance washer since my building's machine is right under the room I work from home! My partner--a California native-- was sure it was an earthquake but I was like "No way, just the washer off-balance". I guess listen to the person who grew up with weekly quakes, right?
Definitely felt like a washer to me, too
Except the tenant with that lousy washer is out of town until May. . . .
Funny enough I felt it in
Funny enough I felt it in Southie and it knocked our washer off balance so I assumed it just have been the washer in the first place. I even searched the USGS site to doublecheck but it hadn’t updated yet.
quake
Felt in in Newtonville, son in Plainville friends in Norwood. !st one I recall feeling thought something fell on roof, big ol telephone building...
Felt in in Davis Square
On the third floor of my brick apartment building. I was on my bed but not asleep.
Still waiting..
.. for just one little earthquake that I'd FEEL. I'm not asking for a big one, but every time there's been one here I'm sitting on goddamn bedrock. (Harvard Square, first floor).
I finally felt one!
I finally felt one!
My whole life everyone talk about the quake that just hsppened and I’ve always been oblivious. Today my stove was rattling and my first response was to check UHub, then text my spouse to celebrate!
Right??!
Right?
I lived in SoCal in the early 90s and slept thru one so I don't remember it.
I was in the basement when the 2011 one occured so I didn't feel it.
The next one I didn't feel either (2016)
This one I finally felt and heard.
Watertown
We felt it for a few seconds. We speculated, among other things, a neighbor using a power tool or perhaps a large truck going by on our street. I somewhat jokingly said "Earthquake!" That it turned out to actually be that is somewhat funny (as long as it was as mild as a 4.0 is and no damage.)

I recall being baffled by this rebranding
as a kid. I'm OG Team Miner helmet.
The change didn't succeed in saving Quake, though Quisp managed to survive for a few more years. I'd ascribe that to shape: Quisp had a delicate, pleasing crunch, while Quake was like chewing gravel.
I thought they were both Cap
I thought they were both Cap'n Crunch ripoffs.
I was a Quisp fan and my brother liked Quake
In my mind, Quisp was clearly just Cap'n Crunch in a different shape.
My One-Time Favorite Cereal
Miner helmet all the way. I wolfed down huge bowls of that stuff while watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Felt it in the South End but assumed
it couldn't be a quake and ascribed it to a big truck rolling by or something. Should have known better: I've lived through a couple of them while on business in SoCal.
Rumbles in West Roxbury
I was sitting at my desk doing work and I felt something shake; the last time we had an earthquake it felt like was a truck going by.
~10 seconds from York to Cambridge
I happened to be on a zoom call with a friend in York, ME. He suddenly looked around and said his house was shaking. About 10 seconds later, I felt it in Porter Square. It was much milder for me. His house is within a few miles of the epicenter. Very cool experience of the phenomenon.
10 seconds plus the Zoom lag.
10 seconds plus the Zoom lag. Have you ever tried to sing over a Zoom?
In Fields Corner too
They recently installed speed humps in my neighborhood. I thought it was another large truck booming and banging over the speed hump. But I quickly looked out the window and there was no truck to be seen.
Fourth earthquake I've felt since 2011, in Davis Square
August 23, 2011: 5.8 in Virginia, strong enough to damage the Washington Monument
November 8, 2020: 3.6 offshore near New Bedford
April 5, 2024: 4.8 in New Jersey
Today: 3.8 near York, Maine
Magoo sez
Magoo was at work at the urinal peeing and when the quake happened Magoo peeeeed all over Magoo’s pant legs. Magoo ran into a stall and Magoon is still in said stall waiting for aid pant legs to dry. Eeeegads! Magoo.
UPDATE: Magoo’s peepee covered pant legs have finally dried. Upon emergence from the bathroom stall Magoo realized it was time to go home so Magoo proceeded to leave work. Magoo.
I must be lacking the earthquake…..
….. sensing gene. Or else this 10 year old building has earthquake resistant features.
I’m jelly of those who felt it.
Same here.
Same here.
In West Roxbury by the quarry
thought it was a mild blast from them, small rumble.
Jaded since the quarry blasts are much bugger rumbles
Medford
I heard this low rumble like a heavy aircraft taking off and my desk and my office (over the garage) was shaking. It also reminded me of the washer going into spin when I lived in a mobile home.
I ruled out low flying aircraft, trucks and trains aren't that close, so that led me to "earthquake".
My Hula Girl toy on my desk shelf really got it going on before she fell over. No injuries.
It shook City Hall
I was on the sixth floor and noticed that the building swaying for a few seconds, I began to check the QuakeFeed app to see if anything was reported, at that point nothing had. Less than a minute later a friend texted me and asked if we just had an earthquake, just as the QuakeFeed sent out the report.
