The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library (BPL) is hosting an exhibition, "We Are One, Mapping America's road from revolution to independence" to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the colonial resistance to the British Stamp Act.

This week, four new maps from the King George III Topographical Collection and other collections at the British Library were added to the exhibition. These maps are "one-of-a-kind", watercolor paintings in a beautiful 18th-century style. Read more.

Anthony Sammarco reports somebody borrowed a collection of photos and documents related to the old West End from the BPL's West End branch and then just never returned them.

A collection of West End photographs and archives was loaned to someone who has not returned it to the West End Library. We are looking to recreate a collection on the Lost West End. Any photographs or materials on the once thriving neighborhood would be greatly appreciated. Please send to West End Library, 151 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA 02114. Let's recreate what has been lost by theft.

City Councilor Steve Murphy said today he has postponed a planned hearing Monday on the Boston Public Library's handling of valuable prints and other items, not because two of those items, worth an estimated $630,000, turned up misfiled rather than stolen, but because he does not want to "compromise the integrity" of federal and city investigations into "the whereabouts of library valuables." Found prints at the Boston Public Library

Amy Ryan, BPL Conservation Officer Lauren Schott and the prints.

The Boston Public Library reported this afternoon an employee found the two prints that had gone missing more than a year ago. They weren't stolen, they were just misfiled.

The Rembrandt and Dürer were found together in Row 14B, Bay 3 on Shelf 2, approximately 80 feet from where the items should have been filed. Fourteen staff members searched 180,000 of the print stack’s 320,000 items (including 200,000 prints and drawings in the Print Collection and 120,000 chromolithographs), totaling 38 rows of the 60 rows of print stacks, or about 60% of the inventory. Nine offices, work rooms, and reading rooms had also been searched. The Durer and Rembrandt have been refiled.

Suddenly outgoing BPL President Amy Ryan announced the find not long after at-large City Councilor Steve Murphy called for all of the library trustees to quit immediately.

Amy Ryan

Boston Public Library President Amy Ryan announced her resignation today, hours after a library trustees meeting at which an aide to the mayor accused her and the library of not doing enough to protect valuable holdings, such as prints recently reported missing from the central library.

Ryan, who came to Boston from Minnesota eight years ago, is stepping down effective July 3. In a statement, she said: Read more.

A concerned citizen squints:

The Hyde Park branch of the BPL has over 25 light bulbs out in the main reading/study room. Upon inquiring about this, I was referred to the custodian who told me work orders have been in for a very long time and there are over 105 lights output in the whole library. Granted that a special lift is necessary, but lighting is crucial in a reading/study/research area. Please help get us some lighting!

Space for lease in the BPL main library in Copley Square

J. Patience was startled by the retail-lease sign on the side of the new wing of the under-renovation BPL main library in Copley Square.

Earlier this month, BPL trustees issued an RFP for companies interested in leasing the space, at the corner of Boylston and Exeter in the under-renovation Johnson wing.

The BPL formally opened its revamped modern wing at the main library in Copley Square yesterday. Whitney Wilson loved the new children's library.

The Herald reports on the battle between the BPL board of trustees, who think it's dandy to decorate the main library with Christmas wreathes, and a Back Bay resident who wants to supplement the wreathes with a menorah.

The mayor, who appoints library trustees, has decided it's "not his place" to try to convince them otherwise.

Frank Baker

UPDATE: The Dorchester Reporter reports Baker doesn't want to rent out space in libraries but instead wants to look at how to include libraries in new mixed-use developments, such as the one that will eventually replace the Globe complex on Morrissey Boulevard.

City Councilor Frank Baker (Dorchester) will ask his fellow counselors tomorrow to consider the idea of turning some branch libraries into revenue generators by renting out space in them.
