Person struck, killed by train on Fitchburg Line between South Acton and West Concord
By adamg on Fri, 03/29/2013 - 4:25pm
An MBTA spokesman said police are still investigating how the person came to be on the tracks before being hit by an inbound train shortly before 4 p.m..
Shortly after 4 p.m., a rider on one train e-mailed UHub:
Train stopped due to what the conductor said is an apparent suicide between the two stops. He said the police are going to be on the scene for a few hours, so now we're waiting for the train to turn back to West Concord to disembark the train.
Transit Police report the man was between 20 and 25. The investigation shut the tracks and caused lengthy delays in both directions.

Transit Police
I saw the Transit police go screaming up Route 2 at Alewife just before 4:30. I was wondering what was going on. Now I know.
Other suicide attempts
Why do people assume no pedestrians crossing the street without looking or otherwise display little/no self preservation also seek exit? Getting in the way of a truck or bus is nearly as certain as in front of a train.
I was sort of surprised that
I was sort of surprised that the conductor described it as a suicide. Not a "body on the tracks" or an "accident," mind you, but a suicide. Given that the tragedy occurred only minutes before the conductor on our train made that announcement, I wonder whether the engineer of the train that struck the person (which was traveling in the opposite direction, from Fitchburg to Boston) saw some behavior that made him conclude it was deliberate. Then again, maybe it was just an assumption on our conductor's part.
Those two Transit Police cars someone alluded to earlier peeled by me on my walk home, too. For the record, I discovered that it takes about an hour to walk from West Concord to South Acton.
I heard that the conductor
I heard that the conductor did see the person on the side of the tracks at a safe distance away, and as the train approached the kid took a flying leap in front of it.
I can tell you that it has been noted before that these kids play "chicken" with the train, and some have reported the kids laying down on the side of the tracks on a dare.
Stupid kids...survival of the fittest I guess.
