A 4.9 is better than a 5 because it means you're an established great rider and not a noob.

Bobble your triple salchow on getting out of the car?

Who recognizes the value of the vetting 4 and takes it upon themselves to assign it. I don't do that myself. 99% of riders get a 5 from me. Telling me how to drive is an automatic four. Open rudeness is a four. I've given two threes and nothing lower than that.

EDIT: I also like how the OP is "losing sleep" while Counting Stars. Nice reference.

How do I find out what I am rated? Now I'm dying to know!

By telling you how to drive, do you mean by giving you directions?

I use Uber a lot and if I see a driver (usually from Quincy or Brockton) slavishly following GPS, damned right I'm going to tell him how to get around my city.

We're going from Back Bay to Kenmore at five in the evening, you go down Comm Ave. You don't get on Storrow in the middle of rush hour, I don't give a damn what your GPS says.

All the men are good looking, and all the riders are above average.

..."you can run that stop sign" or "make that u-turn over the double yellow with cars behind you." Reasonable route suggestions/instructions are fine.

Nice, do you pepper your riders with trivia questions, a la Cash Cab?

Always the Russian judges.

Despite Uber's wonderful no-tipping policy, some scummy drivers refuse to give 5 stars to riders who don't fork over some extra cash. This has been discussed at length on Reddit and other drivers' forums. Most drivers condemn the practice but a few expect a tip, blame Uber for discouraging it, and blame passengers who follow the policy.

You know the deal when you sign up to drive. I get on average one tip a month. And I think I've only been tipped once on rides where I've helped to load goods into the rear.

I've used Uber twice as a passenger and have tipped both times, because I know how little UberX pays if there's no surge.

that Uber needs to fix. One of the main reasons I take Uber is no tipping. I hate tipping, hate the culture it engenders. I am a good tipper in restaurants and in cabs because that is the way the world works. But if Uber is supposed to be non-tipping it should be. I'll pay more to not have to tip.

I'd imagine that would warrant some huge tips.

I tipped when I went to the airport and the guy handled my bag - and also because I wasn't then clear on whether Uber was screwing drivers on the return tunnel toll.

What's the deal on the return tolls now? I don't use Uber to get to/from Logan so I haven't been tracking it.

The Uber showed up within five minutes of the request. I'm betting that the driver dropped a fare, headed to the cell phone lot for a few minutes, and grabbed the next dispatch.

So, in essence, that guy got his "return toll". I can see why it might be an issue otherwise.

I would expect any driver who tried that would quickly find themselves with a lot of one-star reviews.

I'm at 4.7. I've taken 20 rides, so that's 94 out of a possible 100 stars. You have to get one star at a minimum, so I've had somewhere between two and six suboptimal rides. Maybe a 1 and a 3. Maybe two 2s. Maybe six 4s. Who knows?

I'm not always in the mood to chat - introverts no doubt get punished by this system - but when I am I think I'm personable enough. Never rode in one drunk or anything. I have cancelled a decent amount of rides (mostly last winter) so I wonder if that automatically affects the rating.

And you don't have to chat. It's a driving service, not a psychic hotline. A good driver doesn't rate you on that.

A good driver doesn't rate you on that.

Seeing as the driver can choose what criteria they used to rate someone (you posted your own personal list above) so another driver might say if you don't smile and chat that equals a 4.

This is one of the problems with Uber and their rating system. Uber should change it so both the driver and passenger need to write what went wrong if you are going to assign anything lower then a 5. The least you can do is post a sign in your car warning people you'll ding them if they comment on your driving.

that's a little much, I like that it specifically asks you at 3 stars, 4 doesn't mean anything went wrong, just maybe nothing went right. People are petty, there's nothing you can do about that.

How do you check your rating though, the app doesn't show it?

Nevermind, you just ask support for your rating...

I have a 4.8, which is phenomenal since I've been a member since the week Uber opened the app to Android users, like at least once a week.

You have to find the right section about it in the FAQs on their website and then essentially submit a request form asking to be notified what your rider rating is.

http://bgr.com/2015/09/21/uber-passenger-rating-how-to/

"fire up the Uber app and hit the menu icon located in the upper left hand corner (it’s a circular silhouette of a person). Next, tap the ‘Help’ menu. Following that, tap the ‘Account’ menu.

From there, scroll all the way down, tap on ‘I’d like to know my rating’, and then hit Submit. Uber will eventually email you your average passenger rating."

I would take Lyft instead of Uber.

Have used them twice. Outstanding, clean cars, polite people who know where you are going.

A driver may be less likely to pick up a rider with a low rating?
