Dorchester teens face major time for attacking mailman
A pack of five teens who allegedly assaulted a letter carrier on his appointed rounds Tuesday afternoon are now being hunted by both Boston Police and US postal inspectors.
Boston Police report the four males and one female, all between 17 and 19 and all Hispanic, attacked the letter carrier around 3:5 p.m. at Cushing Avenue and Windermere Road.
If caught, they could be charged in federal court, where they would face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
If any of them look familiar, you can contact the Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455, District C-11 detectives at 617-343-4335 or the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or texting the word ‘TTIP to CRIME (27463)

Those kids are so screwed.
Do NOT mess with the mail.
Seriously
The US Postal Inspectors do not f around. It's also a federal crime and they're going to avoid the revolving-door that is the state prison and go straight to the federal pen, where they will do real time.
Plus
Because the postal inspectors are dedicated to mail only crimes and not swamped with "every incident ever," they actually have the resources to deal with something that the regular police might give a low priority.
It seems like a really interesting job
Not to mention dangerous. I remember randomly watching a show or documentary on postal inspectors years ago ('08 or '09). I think it was this, but I'm not sure without watching through it again.
yup
And they will be tried as adults (youngest one is 17). I hope they like federal prison.
They really aren't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree apparently.
Did they catch them already?
Hope so.
So incredibly stupid
Ganging up to attack strangers is a pretty dumb idea of fun anyway. However, these boneheads not only waited until most of them are either legal adults or old enough to prosecute as such, they then made a federal crime out of it!
Bunch of morons.
Because if they had been 15
that would have made all the difference to the victim of a totally pointless assault. Not!
Again
You miss the point of juvenile courts. Please avail yourself of the evidence available in libraries and the internet.
Or, maybe, move to Egypt: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/ahmed-mansour-karmi-four-...
Again, you fail to understand a basic principle here
Assault is assault, regardless of whether the perp is 15 years old or 17. Want to argue all the crap you and your ilk have brainwashed society with, fine. Do it during trial then, and not through a special system of trial and sentencing that is based soley on the perps age.
Perhaps if we adopted this type of a system, then we would have fewer instances of "juveniles" committing serious crimes (like 14 year olds robbing people at gunpoint) once the word got out that "Hey, people getting caught don't get coddled by the system anymore, but instead are facing some real shit."
But how dare we let common sense dictate our "justice system."
common sense
to you is holding kids to an adult standard for crimes but in no way giving them the legal privileges of an adult?
old enough to be held accountable for any crime they commit, but not old enough to decide whether they want to go to math class that day?
unless you think 14 year olds should be able to vote, drive, drink, et cetera too. if you're consistent about it, hey, you're consistent.
also swirly isn't saying that it would matter to the victim if they were juveniles. you're the only one here that is saying that. she's saying that from a judicial standpoint they basically waited until they could be maximum fucked for their idiotic crime, rather than do so under the protection of being considered a kid.
Apples and oranges.
Yes. If a "juvenile" doesn't know that committing serious crimes like robbery and assault is wrong, then perhaps we shouldn't be giving them adult privildges. And if the "juvemile" wants to claim "poor impulse" or "peer pressure" or the like, let them do it at trial as part of their defense and try to convince a jury. But don't insult the public by automatically giving them the benefit of the doubt before the trial even begins.
We don't do it with an insanity defense, we shouldn't allow it just because of a suspect's age.
interesting
so they're fully accountable for their actions but don't have full independence granted an adult citizen
would you say that they're about 3/5ths of a person? does that seem like a fair compromise?
Exactly
Exactly.
But, hey, Roadman isn't interested in more than a century of legal precedent and scientific research - he's irrationally afraid of teenagers, so he wants big daddy government to fix that and show all kids who is bossman!
Postal Justice!
If these same kids beat up a teacher, bus driver, senior citizen or cop the most the would get in court is a stern warning from a liberal judge. The mistake they made was attacking a mail man because the Postal inspectors will simply tell the neighborhood until they get caught you don't get your mail.
lol holding a neighborhoods mail hostage
sounds like something to be really gleeful about, hopefully if that happens other carriers get targeted.
Hopefully the neighborhood
Hopefully the neighborhood will cooperate without having to be extorted for their mail. My mail carrier is awesome - always makes sure packages get tucked away out of sight, hasn't lost anything important, etc - and if they got randomly targeted and I knew the perp I'd certainly say something. Our public servants get a shitty enough job, we should support them when we can.
What an idiotic thing to say.
What an idiotic thing to say. The mail will not held hostage until the perpetrators are turned in. Life doesn't function that way.
Actually, it can.
Actually, it can.
At least for a little while.
The carriers have some discretion in their shop rules with regulars/seniority picking which route they want. A route with a reputation as hard work or a dangerous neighborhood - nobody will take it on as a regular route, resulting in garbage service.
They can hold the mail
Actually the post office can hold the mail for an entire street/neighborhood if they feel its a safety issue. It happens all the time for unruly dogs, sidewalks not shoveled, etc.
Actually,
he very specifically said that they weren't going to hold the mail- in this exact case- until these teenagers are caught.
and he is right. for this one particular instance, they absolutely will not halt mail delivery.

Indeed! It's not fun having to go to the PO to pick up your mail!
Good. What a bunch of losers
Good. What a bunch of losers. Mob peer mentality. Boston Latin? Fugghettaboudit!!!
Three of the five
clearly identifiable. Their defense. They were assaulted by the mailman.
Considering the situtation
They are lucky that he didn't pepper spray them.
Is that Selena?

To be happy. Jerrrrrrrrry!
first week of the month!
I delivered mail in Cambridge for a year. as a casual/temp I got all the shitty routes, usually in the projects. the first of the month everyone is coming at you looking for their checks. they want their check and they want to pick up their neighbors check and they want to pick up their uncle's who lives on the other side of town. sometimes people would get very angry and aggressive. luckily most of the mailrooms in those buildings are lock ins and you can be left alone but some people could be relentless. my first week I kept getting sent to Roosevelt Towers and all the regulars would laugh when the supervisor would shout out my name and my route for the day. an old timer pulled me aside one morning after a week in the Towers and told me to be careful, I was on that route because the previous carrier had acid throw in his face.
acid in face
i've never heard of this and am having trouble finding anything to support it
Try it, you'll like it.
Try it, you'll like it.

Hazing
Bostnkid didn't say that he knew that it happened.
He said an older letter carrier told him that it had happened.
Sounds like classic "things old-timers say to freak out the new kid" stuff. You hear the same sort of stuff from friends of idiot cops who haven't lived in your community for thirty years, as well as exuburban dads who want people to think that they run a death gauntlet to get into the city to work, because city.
oh yeah, of course he was being hazed lol
i understand this entirely, but i'm not trying to pass off being hazed by way of ghost stories as piece of relevant data in (what would be) a similar incident
scumQ...
i was going to explain more of the story but then I saw your twitter page and realized i don't really have to explain anything to you.
how's that four way sex fantasy with taylor swift and her look alike coming along?
oh god
you discovered my twitter page that is frequently involved with uhub stuff that i dont remotely try to hide
WHAT WILL I DO
and to answer your question (lol that you googled me, btw) the fantasy is going great, but the reality is lacking|
(Edit: PS come follow me on twitter guys @scumquistador)
These kids better hope they
These kids better hope they don't get caught, or they'll have to answer to Wilford Brimley.
Local gang initiation
5 young men attack individual in uniform solely to cause harm and fear. That is one of the ways gangs initiate new members. A similar thing happened in JP a few of years ago. A mugging by a group of older teens and younger adults for no apparent reason such as robbery.
There are gangs that specifically attack anyone in a uniform. Compounding the evil of the violence is the absurdity of attacking anyone in a uniform: postal worker, forest ranger, etc. But then if the gangs perceive these to be easier targets then that makes sense.
You know a lot about gangs? Really?
You know so much that you didn't even read the description or even bother to look at the picture - it doesn't look like there are "five young men" here.
Looks like a gang to me
Their outfits all match, black and white, down to the hats and shoes.
How many teenage boys do you know who wear fully color-coordinates outfits with their friends on a regular day?
You're joking right?
3 of the 5 have no hats. The two guys with hats don't match. You can't see everyone's shoes. OK, you must have been kidding. Sorry.
they are...
...still a bunch of little a-holes for doing what they did no matter how you slice it.
I hope at least one or two (hoping for all of them) go to the federal penitentiary for what they did.
Enough of the juvie-state-of-mind excuses already.
A lot? No. Some? Yes
I do know a bit about gangs because my profession requires that I am aware of how gangs operate. I know enough that I can state that this is gang behavior. Whether these four young men and 1 young woman (I should have remembered what I first read above) are in a gang and whether this was a gang initiation has to be determined in court.
But it is foolishness and naivete to ignore the reality that there are gangs, that gangs have initiations and that people are physically beaten up as part of those initiations. Does that mean when I see a group of young adults walking down a street with little traffic that I am more aware and more cautious? Yes. This might be called profiling. I call it enjoying a walk without getting beat up.
But what's with the sarcasm in "You know a lot about gangs? Really?" That kind of juvenile sarcasm I would expect from Donald Trump.
which gang specifically
which gang specifically attacks people in uniform? How many people have they attacked in the last year? I certainly haven't heard of any gang assaults of police in the last year. I think an attack on an EMS worker or firefighter would make the news too.
is it Folk Nation? 18th Street? How often do they attack people in uniform?
People talk about how gangs have initiations that involve them attacking someone but given how many gang members there are in Boston I feel like there would be a lot more random violence in the news. I've never heard a gang member say anything about hurting anyone else for an initiation; every gangbanger I've asked says they were just beat up by a bunch of guys at once when they joined.
please
just shut up
Ever heard of East Boston?
MS-13 is well known for their attacks as part of their initiation process.
Faulty memory
I don't have specifics because the information concerning initiations was learned at a seminar on gangs I attended several years ago. But here is a site that discusses gang initiations. https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/06/11/boston-police-release-descr...
But regardless of the initiations members of criminal gangs commit murder, rape, robberies and run drugs. They murder children. What do the gangbangers you've spoke with have to say about murdering children?
In case you would like to know what children read the Globe article :https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/06/11/boston-police-release-descr... .
I have to ask: Are you implying that gangs are harmless organizations like fraternities that just engage in a bit of hazing but otherwise are composed of fine upstanding citizens?
