I have seen people tearing them apart to avoid paying the fare. These things are not well made and take a while to repair. What a waste of money.

This is a less-used gate than at the headhouse at the other end, which has escalators and is nearer to the apartments.

It just broke and they didn't fix it. Repair ticket has been open on it for weeks, too.

At one point someone piled a bunch of stuff in it to block it, but the safety inspectors nixed that.

Every stop will have free entries. Drunk mobs vs. outdated tech = disaster.

Wood Island also.. 3 fare gates have been in various states of not working.. either jams, out of order, or just not functioning so the gate stays wide open.

Wood Island is also unmonitored most of the time so the gates stay open for days until I tweet about then. Until I started riding the SL3 daily, it was almost a weekly occurrence. They'd fix it by friday only to have it broken again by Tuesday. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Happens elsewhere too.

I honestly think since the Revenue department was trimmed down to bare essentials, the cash management has been outsourced to brinks.. what's left for staff is bare bones. And frankly, I don't think the T gives a shit anymore about AFC 1.0

The rear gate at Savin Hill is a no-pay zone as is the rear gate at Ashmont.

as the escalators.

The main "up" escalator from the Red Line connector hallway to the main commuter rail lobby at South Station has been out of order for just about all year. Once in a while it will be fixed, work for a day or two, and then break down again.

When I walked up the stairs this morning, somebody had taped a photocopy of the grim reaper on the sign directing to the out-of-the-way elevator with the words "Waiting for this to be repaired."

Not a good look for everyone hauling suitcases up the stairs of Boston's premier transportation hub.

Airport is the same. Went thru there Saturday evening.. none one escalator was working. Not a sole around either.

So welcoming for visitors to boston

"Welcome to Boston, now lug your own god damn suitcase!"

Sounds fishy to me.

clearly the people at South Station aren't familiar with Mitch Hedberg.

Chinatown station in the evening often has an open gate.

The T's stationary has "Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence" in the bottom left hand corner.

Who's going to argue with that?

My son works for MassDOT and he uses this headhouse on a daily basis.

He sends pictures of the stuff they do to it to avoid having to fix the damn thing.

Someone mentioned the "pile of random things" already. They have also crisscrossed it with tape, put a "Wet Floor" sign in the gap, varying numbers of traffic cones, etc. One day saw a dead potted plant as an obstruction.

He shows them to his supervisor, who says "but its the newest station".

The best guess as to why it isn't fixed: low priority. Most who use that headhouse come from Partners and have transit passes, so it isn't a big loss. The far more popular entrance is at the other end.

They are always like this and when they make them close anarchists open them again. As it should be public transit should be free.

Otherwise known as your freeloading cousin who advocates for socialism as a cover for not really having to do anything useful in life except loaf on your aunt's couch and try to borrow money with the promise that they will really pay you back this time.

Poor example. Try harder next time. Last time I checked, things cost money.

There's a dirty Beardo Socialist on yer lawn! Quick! Get the moneygun!

How much did you pay to drive from Marshfield to the state line, again?

What is your PILOT payment for using Route 6, Route 3, and I-93?

I'll wait.

It would be truly horrific if you drove it on all these socialist roads.

What about water - do you have a well?

Did you go to private schools?

Should we notify your socialist fire department that you don't want their socialist fire apparatus on your property - ever?

Infuriating when I ( and most people) pay $84.50 a month for crappy service and other people are able to free load. And if the gates aren't open then the 'tailgaters' still find a way to cheat the system. Happens to often.

I wish the T would do something so people would know the faregate can't accept CharlieTickets BEFORE they are about to enter it and notice the tiny Smart Cards Only message on the display. Seems a simple light on or above the faregate would suffice.
